I'm new to 4runners and am wondering what the traction button actually does?

oops: Its a 2001 sr5 2wd auto.

On the 2wd models the traction button should be a VSC defeat switch, on 4wd models locking the center diff defeats VSC. The VSC or vehicle skid control is what can cut your motor when slippage is sensed, so if you are stuck in a snowbank or mud you may need to spin a little to gain traction, if VSC couldn't be turned off that would be impossible. IIRC it turns back on automatically at a certain speed on 2wds, I may be wrong about that though, could be 4th gens.
