Traction Control kicking in when rolling back?

So I noticed some time ago at my dad's house (steep driveway) that is the truck rolled back even a little while in D and I applied the gas that the TC would kick in with the clicky crap and cut the throttle. Figured it was no biggie, just worked around it.
Well, today I was at a friend's house who has a really steep driveway. Had to move my car and backed up, braked to a stop, the time between the brake and applying the gas was miniscule. Sure enough CLICK CLICK CLICK. How embarrassing that my "trail edition" 4Runner could not properly handle a steep driveway. I turned TC off and it still does it. WTF?

I've never had a car that would do this under these conditions.

So far it's pretty sad that I actually prefer to drive my '94 Land Cruiser rather than my '10 4Runner. The LC has zero issues at 170k miles while my 4runner has the shudder issue, TC going haywire, and the iPod interface tends to go batty sometimes. Toyota sure isn't what they used to be which I find quite sad as my father has owned nothing but Toyota for over 30 years and only has had one issue.

Any suggestions on the TC thing besides taking it to the typically incompetent dealer?

Mine makes wierd clicky noises too!
I don't think it cuts the throttle just have to give it more as the brake is on.

Should we order you an audio version of the owners manual, would that help?
 
Yes, I believe that is the hill start assit. My 4th gen does the same. No worries.

Probably replace the transmission under warranty first..:ybrick:
My Hac beeps while engaging and doesn't completely stop the truck.
I like in the video it says "...while gently applying the brakes" nothing gentle in the sounds that come out.

Did Toyota give you an owners manual?
Sure did, Toyota spared no expense! I managed to get floor mats too, lucky me.

It's page pg.256 in the manual.
I'm aware of the Hill Assist they describe, what my vehicle is doing does not correlate at all to what they have printed.

I help verify this infection sometimes through immunohistochemical staining or silver stain.

Clearly stated? Not quite, not by a long shot. This is not my first vehicle with hill assist. My M3 and my Mini both had it and neither made a sound like a bear trying to claw its way out of a steel crate. They simply held the brake for a few seconds and disengaged them. This is NOT a nice and smooth process like that at all, complete opposite. Thank you for the oh so helpful reply though chief.

This makes the most horrendous noise, the manual does not say "the system will sound like a crackhead trying to escape an aluminum coffin by digging with their fingernails and your vehicle will go through the vehicular equivalent of a seizure."

LMAO, the bear, crackhead and vehicular seizure comments are some funny sh!t!!! I applaud you for a great scence of humor.

Agreed. When I think about the concept of HAC, I believe it should function such that there is NO rolling backwards at all. The driver should be able to take his foot off both pedals for any amount of time and the vehicle should stay put. I've been in a few cars that do this. My 4R does this sometimes...it's very inconsistent, even on some of the same steep stop lights, stop signs, etc. that I drive on a regular basis. :confused:

1st car I had was my dad's used 84 Subaru GL with over 100k on it. Manual, and when the clutch was depressed while in 1st gear at a stop, it refused to let the car roll back a whisker until the clutch started coming out. So when you let off the brake there was no rush; you could keep the clutch in and not roll anywhere.

With all the other computer controlled elements of the 4Runner, it is surprising that they don't have a simple solution for this. Like most of the other "issues" people report on, it really just comes down to properly learning the truck and how it behaves.
 
This has happened to me a few times. In my scenario though I was: Backing down the driveway (downward slope of 5-7%)and my selector in reverse. I then came to a complete stop on grade and shifted into Drive. During the split second of releasing the brake and applying the accelerator the vehicle rolled back a bit (inches) and upon initial acceleration the vehicle made the noise you guys so succinctly described. Moving forward a few feet, applying the brakes again and releasing them allowed the vehicle to reset into the hill start mode. While I cannot be sure (I do not design electro-mechanical systems for Toyota - sorry)I believe what could be happening is the vehicle, being switched from Reverse to Drive and not making any initial forward movement, is not completely engaging the hill start assist. I believe the braking system is going into a quasi "ABS" mode and I am hearing the "chatter" of the pads slapping the rotors and the screeching is the rotors dragging backwards through the chattering pads. As I said above, moving forward and applying the brakes again and releasing them apparently succeeds in signalling the sensors that you really need the Hill Start Assist and are not just fooling around. In short, I THINK the vehicle needs to be moving in the "up grade" direction (forward or reverse) before coming to a stop - thereby allowing the Hill Start Assist to fully take over during the "release brake to acceleration" phase. I cannot say with certainity though as I have only tested my 4Runner and no other. I just went back to my tried and true "two foot" method and have not had any more "crackhead/box" noises. Hope this helps.

I understand and agree, although: I did come to a complete stop before shifting and the "roll back" was the split second between lifting from the brake control and applying accelerator. Again, I THINK (read above post) there needs to be movement in the up grade direction beforehand in order for the HSA to perform as advertised. In my situation I was reversing downhill, came to a stop, put the 4Runner in D, rolled back a few inches and accelerated. THEN the noise. In normal operation (which I have done countless times) you are driving along, stop on a hill, release the brake in anticipation of acceleration and - no noise, no roll, nothing but normal. Like I said before: I think it is the fact I was going one direction (down) and stopped and shifted to go the other direction (up) but did not move in that direction first that causes this condition. Hopefully someone else can read this post and try it themselves.
 
i experienced this today and was truly startled by the noise. sounds terrible - and this being only my 8th day with my new 4r it scared the heck out of me at first.... seems like this is something that needs to be a little more seemless.
 
More than likely, this is set up the way it is (throttling the accelerator, and applying the brake like ABS/TC) so that you don't spin the tires. It is basically walking the line between the brake and the gas to give you enough gas to move forward, but not so much that you spin the tires.

ATs and MTs are very, very different animals. A hill holder clutch is nothing like what you'd have to do with an AT to keep it from rolling back. Just the nature of ATs versus MTs.
