Traction Control OFF??

Your half correct. The center diff is a limited slip when its unlocked and a locked diff when is locked, no exceptions. It will never send 100% power to one side or the other so it will never behave like an open diff unless it's malfunctioning.

We're even. I don't know what you're trying to convey either.

Locked is locked. No need to go there.

Torsen (when unlocked) can distribute torque like a locked or open diff, depending on conditions. Up to a point, it will mimic locked. Past that point, it starts to resemble open.

That the center differential in a 4th gen 4runner isn't open. I don't know why your having a hard time grasping this concept.

Message boards are funny places. Everything old is new all over again.....and again, and again.

One of the things I've learned in 8 years here is how to avoid semantic vortices, so feel free to use whatever naming you wish.

As far as how it operates, once the diff reaches the limits of torque bias, the end with the least traction can transfer no more extra torque to the end with traction. If that's not enough torque to move the vehicle, you might as well have an open diff. The fact that the insufficient torque on the slick side is being multiplied instead of completely bled off like an open diff doesn't mean much when you're stuck. If enough traction to move the vehicle starts to return to the slick side, then the open behavior starts to shift and resemble more of a locked behavior.

Your first post in this thread you said it was a limited slip which is 100% correct. Then you went on to say it can behave like an open diff which makes it an open diff. If anyone is using the "naming that they wish" its you, i'm using the naming that the manufacturer wishes...Example: if you put 7 people in a 4runner then it can behave like a minivan but that doesn't make the 4runner a minivan!

Sorry I just had to get that out of me but since were not really making any progress here I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
