Traction Mats

Are traction mats (like "Tow Truck in a Box") ever worthwhile? I can't imagine them being all that useful for serious off roading, but what about snow/ice on backroads?

If you think they are useful, are they any particular models/brands you'd recommend?

I find that sort of thing extremely useful, and is far and away my most commonly used recovery item. I have cheap ones designed for use in snow (I'll post some pics when I get home). I have been using them for years with cars and trucks mainly in snow, and occasionally in mud and sand. They work. Always. They have never failed me. I have used them to climb steep icey hills a few feet at a time, gotten out of countless parking spots in deep snow etc. I love them. They cost me $20 and fold up nice and small and are quick and easy to use. I am actually very surprized they are not stadard kit for anyone who either offroads or lives in the snow belt.

This is the best pic I find in my photo collection. Next time I am out I'll take more pics, and maybe in a few video clips on them in action. They fold up which is nice. My dad has older ones that are bigger and rigid, which I used to use a lot when I was younger and borrowed his car. The rigid ones are nice because you can really jam them down under the tires. The downside is that they sometime get flung out as you drive over them and can hit someone/something. The folding ones don't get flung. I have seen some bigger more expensive options online that probably work better but they cost hundreds and are huge. I highly suggest starting with something like mine and seeing how you like them.

I dont have any and can never find them, but used the ridgid ones a few times. Cuts down on shoveling time. I would love to find the folding ones like you have Will. If dealing with mud or sand advise you tie some rope to the end to assist in pulling them out once you drive over them.
