Trade-In Tax Credit????

No sales tax in Oregon, even on vehicles. Licensing is reasonable as well.

For the list.. here in Idaho you pay tax on the difference in value between the trade and the new car. Has nothing to do with what you may owe on the rig.

Also in Idaho you own the plate on the rig, and take it with you when you sell or trade. so registration/DMV fees for a new 4runner when I bought it was about $15.00 as the tags on my plate were still good.

Oregon is one of the states I'm looking at to retire in, i retire in about 8 years. as well as alaska, washington, colorado, Utah, etc basically the north western region of the united states (even northern california near the coast, but definitely bottom of my list due to how expensive it is)..... I have a lot of time to research but my criteria would be how much I get taxed in my retirement years, how much beautiful landscape there is to overland in the locality, low crime rates, and smart schools to raise the children..... I'll be 38 when I retire and told the wife it would be her turn to work while I go out fishing and hunting, if anything get a small job on the side for supplementation...can't wait....Im moving to FT Irwin CA in october so I have to drive from here in NY all the way over there, we're making a cross country trip stopping over in Colorado, Utah, Nevada then cali, plenty of time to do some camping on the way and check out the trails those states have to offer.... Already have a gobi rack on order and a rooftop tent waiting to order from the current group buy they got here on the forums...also looking at the manleyorv trailer (as soon as they send me back on a quote, been about 4 days since I left a voicemail and email to them, have heard nothing back yet, do they even want to make a sell or what?), If anybody got suggestions on a comparable trailer let me know.... Im looking to buy within the next month... ack... now I'm just blabbering....

Florida Rules

that is a long list of commi states right there! we pay the difference in FL, we all carry guns and have no state tax..... of course that is why there are a bunch of illegals here but nonetheless

I can attest to that. I lived in Florida for nearly 40 years. Grew up in Clearwater/Tampa Bay, lived in Naples for almost 10 years, and later in Palm Coast between Daytona and St. Augustine, lastly was in Lakeland for a couple of years until I left. I loved it there until the job market tanked in 2008 and onward.

I've since lived in Arkansas and now Oklahoma, both with State Tax, both with fairly high sales tax but Arkansas also has a Personal Property Tax you have to pay annually. We moved from there in August 2013 and in 2014, I STILL had to pay the state of Arkansas almost $500 for personal property tax for the first 1/2 of 2013...

You're from Tampa right? Ever been to Wright's deli on Dale Mabry? If not, you need to go there!

In Arizona you just pay the sales tax on the price difference in value. The sad part is license plate cost is based on vehicle value. I just renewed my 2014 plates and it cost $656 for one year. My old 03 4runner was about $90 per year.

My boss has purchased a place in Sand Pointe Idaho for the exact reasons you've mentioned. Turns you they were directed there by doing research and traveling. They used a website called "Findyourspot.com" which allows you to input a lot of criteria from financial to recreational and it will suggest places that fit your needs. Best of luck to you!

Doesn't really matter what state your in they all get the same taxes paid from you. If they are not taking it on the sale, they get it at the gas pump. If they don't take it from those two buckets then you'll see it in the property tax bill or yearly registration. The only time anyone ever has a problem with taxes is when they actually see a lump sum being charge to them. no one cares about the nickles and dimes they take every day. Add that money up over a years time to show everyone and you'd have pitch forks and torches in the streets.

aweaver65 California even taxes for online purchases, where most states don't tax online unless they have a store BASED IN the state*food for thought*.... but yeah, Murica!

California (and most other states) have had a use tax in place for a long time. In theory, if you don't pay sales tax when you buy it (such as online from an out of state retailer) you have to report the purchase and pay use tax on your income tax return. It is intended to close the loophole of buying something out of state to avoid sales tax.

In practice, very little is reported... hence the change to require sales tax on online purchases shipped to CA. It's not actually a new tax obligation, just an easier way for CA to collect the tax.

Nope, the person you spoke to at the DMV is wrong. You pay on the difference in NYS. Just did this 2 months ago. Traded two trucks for one truck, we owed the same amount, paid no taxes at all. It makes no difference whether you have a loan. I dont even understand that. Its not like NYS has gotten sales tax every month from your loan payment and has had to wait for it.

Go back and talk to someone who knows what the hell they are talking about.

I live in ny and bought my truck in New Jersey. You only pay tax on the amount minus the trade in.

In Utah you only pay sales tax on the difference between your trade in and your purchase price.

In Montana there is no sales tax - on anything... ever. (There is an exception for resort tax in a few resort towns). Oregon or Montana are your best states if you have the option of choosing any states as they are reasonable in license fees and no sales tax.

The BEST part of Montana's licensing is that there are no inspections or emissions testing ever, and once it's 10 years old your renewal is good for as long as you own the car. My Land Cruiser has Montana plates and a permanent license plate. I pay nothing and do nothing to keep it licensed and registered for as long as I own it!

In Louisiana you subtract trade value before tax then add back what you owe on the vehicle after. The down side is that tax on a vehicle is based on the tax rate of where you live, not where the dealer is located, and I live in a higher sales tax city than where any of the dealerships are. The good news is that you get to deduct sales tax and a vehicle purchase can take you over the standard deduction. We purchased 3 Toyotas last year at 9% tax.

Update on situation.... So went to another DMV to get a second opinion, I told them what happened at the first DMV and basically they just called the first DMV to see what happened and told me they are in agreement (never looked at whatever regulations they have, just shared opinions on the phone and came to the conclusion that I owed full tax)... Tried to show them straight from there own NY state tax website the procedure to for the difference of price of vehicle and trade in allowance, they wouldn't even look at it and said there is nothing they can do.... Frustrated I went to to the nearest Toyota and the nice ladies there understood my situation and held onto my paperwork to see what they could do, they knew people AT the DMV. During my wait on the phonecall from the dealership, I went straight back to the first DMV with the NY state TAX people on the phone to explain them the procedure, as I was there, the supervisor talked on the phone with the TAX people. She changed her tone after talking to the tax people and went from wanting to kick me out attitude to finally understanding where I was coming from. She still felt uncomfortable with it and told me to go see if I can have the dealership itemize the numbers more clearly(price of vehicle and trade in allowance is clearly itemized, she is still confused with the other numbers such as downpayment, net allowance, etc etc) Come to find out, the way retail orders and bill of sales numbers are articulated on the sheet itemized is confusing to the people at the DMV, they are not trained to differentiate the numbers as the Dealership is (hence you always let the dealership do the paperwork for you).... So with all of that, I left that DMV still frustrated, Finally got a call from the dealership I was told to go back to the second DMV and see a particular person that was informed of my situation. They were willing to charge me the right tax on the difference of the price of vehicle and trade in allowance but warned me that I will get audited due to the low taxed amount (its the way the DMV's system work). When I get audited I just get all my paperwork ready.... AFTER ALL OF THAT.... I just overnighted the dahm paperwork to hawaii to have my father register it for me in my name. Because the stress I was put through and the way I was treated (made me feel like I'm trying to cheat the system), just didn't feel right paying the money to NY DMV even after it was situated, and the whole audit thing just irritated me more.... Golly!! sorry for the rant.... situation finally fixed, hope people can learn from my experience if it ever happens to you.....

How does registering in Hawaii help? Don't you live in NY? These idiots who can't read a sales order are the same people who tilt their head like a confused puppy when you try to get exact change at a fast food restaurant (like when you have a bill for $5.57 and you hand them $6.07 looking to get two quarters back or something like that)

Personally, I wouldn't let them intimidate you with the threat of an audit. You're right and it's on them to prove otherwise. It's not the same as an IRS audit. It would only be a letter asking about the details pertaining to your T4R.

haha yea no sales tax on vehicles but buckle up for your upcoming trial of the "pay by mile tax" your state is adopting...

That is what happens when you have incompetent people running things. Its almost like they were going to personally pocket the extra tax they were collecting on you. I hate incompetence. Was that the DMV in watertown?

I personally would have not mentioned to DMV #2 that you had discussed anything with DMV #1... they dont need to know that kind of information. Just try number two and see if they come clean with their own conclusion of what you owe without corroborating with DMV #1 and ultimately having to back them us so neither of them looks stupid/incompetent...

Also you're in the military which the "locals" near military bases dont like so they look for every opportunity to screw you...

Yeah, I should have not said anything about the first situation...First DMV was the fort drum one, second DMV is the watertown.. but oh well.... after all the headache I found somebody at waite toyota dealership to help me so it was refreshing to finally find somebody who cared enough to get to the bottom of it... I found satisfaction in the fact that I was right(lady kept saying she was in the business for 28 years and knows her job), and I can take that as a win in this whole ordeal.... But deep down inside, I can't help but think how many people overpay???? If any lessons is learned, it is to double check numbers when paying for things.. nobody cares about your money except you...
