Traded in the 4R

Over the past few weeks I have been looking at smaller cars with better MPG's and easy on the pocket. So i went and traded in my 03 V8 for a 2016 Jetta TSI. My main reason for it was the moneyI would be spending in repairs on the 4R. It would have needed Both front control arms, both front wheel bearings, timing belt water pump, new cv boots, the trans made a loud rumble/vibration when at a stop or in park seemed like it wanted to jump forward, and also the hole in the frame from rust. I noticed the rust was really bad when i went to jack the truck up for the first time. I went to set the truck down on a jack stand and it just sank into the frame. The frame was pretty bad. From that point on I ate at me. So... She gone. 4Runners are great SUV's. Maybe ill own another one day. Until then!

Everybody's situation is different, but gas would have to be around $10/gallon for me to change vehicles. Those impending repairs . .. I think you did the smart thing & walked away.

Congrats on the new vehicle! The hardest part for me when I jump in the wife's civic is all the damn SUV headlights in the rearview mirror (and sides) at night. For that reason I'd have a hard time going permanently lower.

No pictures of the frame. Wish I Would have taken some though. It was right near the front on the passenger side where the transmission cradle is. Theres a seem where it looks like the frame may have been joined together from the factory and thats the area. I thought it could crack the frame on a big bump or possibly while off-roading. Just couldn't take that risk. Even patching it wouldn't have eased my mind any. Its rust. Cant stop it. Car was originally from Pittsburgh and moved to VA/DC untill i bought it at 128,000 miles. Only had 139,500 on it at trade in.

Yea. I checked the truck before I purchased it. Just didn't do a great job i guess. I thought it was all surface until that happened

Did the samething

with my 3r gen b/c "if" it was ever totaled i'd never get my $$ out of it and b/c it only had 143k and i could get good money for it. Then i bought a BMW X3. Fun car. Fast as all get go and AWD handled like a slot car. Sold it after 8 months and bought the current 06' SE 4WD. Just couldnt go without the convenience of having a larger vehicle.

some people say this town doesnt look good in snow but i dont know..

I'm in the NoVA area and in general frame rust is pretty common and people up here don't do anything to protect the underside. I got a old miata that I'm grinding away rust and putting por15 everywhere.

Its has to pass a state inspection before re-sale. Everything wrong with it can be repaired. Calm your happy ass down. You should be convicted for being so stupid to think any thing you posted is a valid statement. Its no longer my issue as it is the dealers issue now. They can do what they want with it. I lost money on it. Its worth more in parts then what I traded it for. Like i said, calm your happy ass down.

If he traded it in to the dealer then the dealer has an obligation to check every car they sell for safety. When it doesn't meet those standards, that car is auctioned off to a company for parts or for a company to fix. Therefor, his liability is automatically waived to the dealer. Without him saying a word before trade in, that dealer should have checked over that car either way. Try explaining to a judge why he should be liable because he didn't tell a business who specializes in buying, selling, and fixing cars that his car has problems. The judge would laugh at you. I traded my 2013 jetta with 42k for my t4r, i was getting away from that money pit asap. within the 3 years I owned it many failures for a new vehicle. Here's hoping you don't have the same issues I did, but I made a great choice for myself going from jetta>t4r.

Also hope you signed the form stating any known issues on the truck. That is where you will get screwed.
