While what you are saying is correct, 8.9" vs 9.6", the cut away corners give a much more aggressive approach/departure angles, which is widely useful in it's own right, even without the ground clearance in certain instances.
Personally I think it's easier to actually lift the truck than to start modifying bumpers, body panels, fenders.
Being a desert guy, it’s not really the ground clearance that is holding me back now. I don’t really feel like chopping up the bumper or buying a new one to get the same result on my 4Runner either.
4Runner approach angle is 33-degrees and departure angle is 26-degrees.
ZR2 approach angle is 30-degrees and departure angle is 23-degrees.
