Trail Edition features

Hi there,

trying to decide between SR5 and TE, I need your expert opinion.

Crawl Control, Multi-terrain ABS, Multi-Terrain Select - how usefull are they for off-raoding purposes? Does the presence of them make a 4Runner more capable off-road wise?

Also, if anyone knows about the possibility to install undercarriage protector plates on the basic SR5 model.

Thank you all who responds.

the approach and departure angles on the TE are alot better than the SR5 which would aid in off roading. i've tried crawl control and its definetly a cool feature to have when off roading. havent used it too many times but its nice to know its there. the multi-terrain abs/select is REALLY nice. i love being able to adjust the traction control and other aspects of the vehicle like throttle response for the terrain i'm driving in. if i had to give up one or the other i'd definetly give up the crawl control over the multi-terrain abs/select.

the TE comes stock with skid plates and what not so your pretty much good to go. throw on a set of AT tires and the TE makes a formidable off roader.

if you're looking for a daily driver that you can take on the trails on weekends in stock form, i'd pony up the cash for a TE.

but then again... i may be a little biased... :biggrin2:

the SR5 is certainly no slouch, but the Trail is the better choice for off-roading: standard rear locker; better approach/departure angles; available KDSS. the multi-terrain select and other electronic additions are shared with the new LandCruiser (tells you something) but a skilled driver is priceless.

it's a safe bet that companies like BudBuilt will be offering full skids for all grades of 4Runner. (but the Trail is already fairly well protected in stock form.)

The biggest advantage that the Trail Edition has is the rear locker. If you offroad it should be a no brainer to go with the Trail Edition.

KDSS is standard in Canada. no Nav though...

and yeah, the rear locker is friggen awesome :D

Sounds I need all these features. Damn, I'm 6.5' tall guy, and this freakin moonroof drives me crazy! There is barely free space between my head and the roof, and this is the only reason I look at base SR5. I would definitely opt for TE, if there would be the possibility to get rid of this thing.

is your head hitting the moon roof?

have you tried lowering the seat in the TE? it is 8 way power adjustable i believe, my buddy is 6'3 and sat in it just fine after making a few adjustments...

go back to the dealership and play with the seats if you havent :D

I am 6'5" and i have no problem with my head hitting the roof in my TE. I have the seat all the way back and down. now on the passenger side, thats a different story... but then again its my T4R so I get to drive:biggrin2:

I am also 6'5" and own the TE. I was really pleased with how low the driver's seat will go, which gives me plenty of headroom. I find that the headroom in the 5G 4Rs is far superior to the 4G even though Toyota's statistics show that the front headroom in each model is virtually identical. Cast aside any fears about headroom and you will be glad you chose the TE - it is an amazing machine!

When I went to look I decided on the SR5 for 2 simple reasons.

1) I really only needed 4WD for winter...not for serious 4-wheeling. 95% of my driving will be on pavement.

2) TE was $3-5K more for things that I would never use.

Ultimately it comes down to do you really need all of the offroading bells and whistles?

I agree and got an SR5, because

1. I don't want a 40k vehicle without leather
2. The SR5 is a very capable off road machine, better than 95% of the vehicles out there. SR5 is fully skidplated.
3. Crawl and Multi-terrain are for people who don't know how to drive off road.
4. In a few years Nav will go the way of the carphone. Unnecessary.

That being said, would liked to have had the option to get rear locker on the SR5 and find a way to improve the approach angle on the SR5, like removing the front plastic spoiler.

1. - matter of taste - I do not like leather - too cold in winter, sweaty in summer.
2. - No skid plates on Canadian SR5.
3. - Or may be vise versa - those things not for ones who do not know how to use them?
4. - Agree.
