"Trail Look" Black wheels that don't rub on stock LE

Hi all,

My LE 20" tires are just about done and I am looking for a new set of 17" wheels and like the Trail (multi-hole) look but would prefer black (no chrome accents).

From what I have read here (17x8.5) MB72s and Level8 Trackers would both rub without doing some modification. Is there anything similar in black?

Or is my best bet some Trail/FJ wheels and black them out?

Sure seems that would be your cheapest option as lots of FJ / T4R owners sell those wheel straight off the lot. Speaking of which I've considered doing that myself on my silver Trail. For anyone that may have done that I'd sure appreciate seeing the photos.

I just took off my 20s and put on 18x9 level 8 grappler in matte black. went with 265 70 18 rubber. very slight rub at stock height but i fixed it with five minutes of removing plastic from fender.

What exactly did you have to trim/modify to stop the rubbing?

What was the total cost for the new setup?

i got the wheels from discount tire website for $504.00 for the set!!! i got the tires at the local discount tire store for $900.00. i needed new tires and was gonna have to buy them anyway. I had to get rid of those stock 20s. i did a ton a research. if you go 18x9, you can run a 275 65 or a 265 70. i had to remove a small piece of plastic that is part of the mudflap but was able to leave the mudflaps on. i am not handy at all, so i was amazed that i was even able to do it.

Probably someone has but honestly you would be better off selling the LE rims for $900 or $1000 and getting new rims that give you 7.5 or 8 inches of width. The stock 7 inch width is just plain weird. Not a lot of sense in paying for the sandblast and powder, "ruining" to many potential buyers the LE wheel and still being stuck with only a few tires that fit. Most of the people here who wheel their trucks, need more tire sidewall and go down to a 17 inch rim. If you don't wheel and want the black look, just plasti dip the wheels. You don't need powdered wheels to drive surface streets. Just my $.02. My guess is it would run about $800-$1000 to do all the labor and powder the wheels... too much for just a look.

I think your actual tire size on a 17" wheel is going to be the determining factor in whether or not there is any rubbing. I currently am running 265/70/17 (SR5 stock size) BFG ATs on 17x8.5 Level 8 trackers (-6 offset IIRC). I haven't done any mods to the fender wall , and I haven't had any rubbing issues during normal driving conditions or mild-to-moderate off road conditions. That said, I haven't been at full stuff yet, so maybe there could be some rubbing in that specific instance. If you are trying to cram 285s in there without lifting your truck you're more likely to run into issues.

There's been some good threads in the past on picking black wheels, like this one. I do love my V-Tech wheels (from Discount Tire) but I also see people have had great results just taking some stock wheels and painting them black, which you can pick various amounts of gloss or flat to your liking. That sort of FJ phone-dial type wheel painted black i think looks great!
Like others here i had to remove a plastic piece in the wheel well due to negative offset of my new wheels.

Were you rolling through Lynnwood today? I saw a Lifted Silver Trail. Though, it may have been a female driver... Passed on 36th. Not many Trials in this area, and even fewer lifted.

Jim, that may have been my wife you seen driving my 4runner. I live in the Lynnwood area, and have a Silver trail w/ plasti dip on the wheels. Her normal commutes usually takes her on 36th ave.

OP: I would suggest getting some FJ wheels/TE and just plastidip them first before powder coating them. I have had mine done for a year and its still going great.

Right on neighbor, probably was her. I live off of 164th. Honk if you see me around. I've not seen any other Shoreline Blue Trails in Sno or King counties since I've own one. I know the late SeattleMike had one, and that his family was selling it, hopefully it went to a good local home.

I'm thinking of dipping my wheels. Did you do them while they were on the truck or off?
