Trailer harness
The wiring kit that comes with the truck is for electric brakes for a trailer. I have a small utility trailer with 4 wire harness. It used to be connected to the brake lights on my sedan using an adapter kit.
For my 4runner, I bought a Toyota Plug to 4 wire trailer harness adapter at the local camper place for about $20. The 48 inch cable was $8. All the new 4runners have a trailer jack below the bumper. It is capable of 7 wire connections (hence the ability to control electric brakes).

Kind of related... But I noticed that I had a wire harness in the glove box, but on the receptacle under the rear bumper there is only some kind of socket - do I need to purchase a socket that has a 4-pin connector on it and stick it in there? Or was this supposed to have come with the truck?

The one in the glove box is for connecting trailer electric brakes. It's in the manual somewhere. You must purchase your own trailer harness. There are a lot of adapters sold at auto parts stores too. They were all sold out of what I needed for my 4runner, so I went to a camper place and they had everything.
The picture shows the adapter , it is a barrel shaped plug that will fit the 7-pin toyota socket. Depending on the trailer you're going to tow, the other end needs to be the right kind of plug. Most small trailers are 4 -wire type flat connectors, since they don't have elevtric brkaes. When you start to approach 2000 pounds, you should get a trailer that has it's own brakes for safety reasons. Thats when you will need the brake wiring harness in the glove box.

Thanks ToolmanJohn, I went to my local boat parts store and they hook me up with the adapter. However, I had to replace all the the lights in my trailer because there was a short. Anyway I fix everything and I am ready to go JetSkiing nex holy week.

4th Gen 7 pin have "power through" to trailer?
Does the factory 7 pin harness on an 04 4runner Sport have a keyed power supply from the battery back to the trailer? Pulling a light camper and want to add a couple deep cycle marine batteries to it for when not on campground power. Curious if there is existing power supply to the plug or if I need to run one. Looks like it gets run to pin 4 if I have to do it myself. Thank you in advance.
