I was towing a trailer with my '99 SR5 and smoke started coming out of the dash/steering wheel with an burned electrical smell. Everything still worked so I put off checking out exactly what burned up. This was a while ago so I cant remember if I had to change a fuse or not but they are all good right now. Some time after I noticed the fuel gauge broke. It will go above full when I turn the key they drop below empty after a few seconds and stay there.
I searched and a few people have had this exact towing/smoke issue and suggested replacing the towing wire harness can fix the fuel gauge. I opened the cargo panel and unplugged the converter but it didn't change anything. Nothing looks melted back there and the trailer lights still work. I suppose since the smoke came out the dash it's something in there but I'm not sure where to start poking around or what could be replaced?
