Tranny, diff and transfer Oil for 03? can u help

hey team
ive tried a few searches
im looking into a fluid change on my tranny, diff (front and rear i would assume) and transfer case
i was wondering if any one knew what fluids i should ask for?
just when i go into the shop i can be direct on what the 4runner needs....
i have a 03....v8 full time 4wd
any info or experiences would be great

The diff's and transfer case take 75w90 and I would put synthetic in them.

To fill all three it takes a little over 6 quarts. The transfer case takes 1.5 quarts.

BTW this is all in your owners manual.

More importantly, the front diff requires a 10 mm hex-key. I used a 15/16 inch socket on the rear as my metric set does not go up that high (it might be a 24 mm socket for the rear drain plug?)

Front Diff Drain
90430-24003

Rear Diff Drain
12157-10010

Transfercase Drain
90430-18008


You only need two Rear Diff Drain. One for the drain, one for the fill. They are crush style. The other two are solid, no need to replace.

A diff oil pump is very handy. Put the gear oil on top your hot water heater the night before. It will flow much easier warm.

I see that all this stuff is for 4WD models. I have a 2WD. So the rear diff and engine are it for me.
(chime in if I am missing something here

My question is this... is 2000 miles too soon to do the switch-over to mobil1 diff oil and engine oil. Should I wait until 5k? I plan on 75w90 for the diff and staying with 5w30 for the motor.

p.s. not meaning to hijack the thread here.

Are they the quantities for the V8? I thought (but not sure) that the V6 and V8 had different quantities listed, at least for one of those. Something tells me the front diff has a different capacity but my owners manual is at home and a I can't check.

2003 V8 4X4. Taken straight from the Amsoil website. I bought 7 quarts of the lube for my change, and had over half of a bottle left over.

I bought two 10-packs of fiber washers for the two different IDs, and use them in various places. I do not use my torque wrenches for fill/drain plugs.

Engine Oil - Toyota says wait until the first oil change, 5000 miles.

In the FAQ:

"If you decide to use synthetic oil for the engine, it is best not to switch until the first scheduled oil change. "

I changed my oil 4 or 5 times the first 5k with regular oil.


I think you can switch the diff to synthetic whenever. My 05 did not come from the factory with synthetic. I don't know if the 06s are any different.

Thanks. I'll wait until 5k to do the diff and engine oil change. I've already changed the oil with dino a few times already.

Where did you get that info? My books says 1, 2.4 and 1.1 quarts. But then they also say the trans is 2q from the drain pan, but when i measured it it was 4.

I cut & pasted it from the Amsoil site. When I had the dealer change my gear oils, I bought 7 quarts. They returned a little over a half of a quart. I'd say that the amounts must be accurate.

Same here. I bought 7 quarts from Amsoil and I have about a half a quart left over sitting in my garage.

element, maybe you were reading the Imp.QT (there are three types of quantities; Quarts, Liters and Imp. Quarts)

Gear oil...smells like a dead dinosaur.

Make sure you wear some old clothes when you do change your diff oil...
