Any idea what it should cost me to replace or rebuild the tranny for a model year 2000 4WD 6CYL?
146k miles and the guy wants 1800 for it, tranny slips between 2nd and 3rd.
Depends. I picked one up for $650, and did the install myself just this past week. You can get a reman for $1770 online, and get $300 back when you send your old one back. To have someone rebuild it would most likely be around $1500-$2000.
So I'd be looking at somewhere between 3800 and 4300 for the truck with a rebuilt tranny and 146k miles on the motor/truck... Have never bought one this old, does that seem like a reasonable amount for a 2000 4WD that needs bumpers too?
The wife is driving our 2006 now so I am looking for an older beater.
I wouldn't pay that much if it needs a new transmission and bumpers from the start. You'll also want to check the frame for rust since you're in a high salt area.
Eh, that's kind of what I figured, but it's very difficult to find a 4WD here in San Antonio. We're stationed here until December (US Navy) and this truck was just driven down from NH by an Army guy I know.
With how stout the transmissions are on our 4runners. I would question him if something else was wrong with it. Maybe something along the lines of a strawberry milkshake. Our transmissions will last a long time, a lot longer than 146k. Check out the radiator, does it look new?
