Tranny issue: So I am driving up the 25...

... and I start to see smoke coming from under my truck. 30k into a 2500k road trip. I pull over, see a drip and touch and figure it's tranny fluid burning off. Being that my wife, 2yr old, dog an the kitchen sink are with me and we are starting a 2500k road trip to NorCal and back- I freak and go to a shop. 2 hours later they tell me my tranny had 2 quarts too much tranny fluid in it, and drain 2 quarts. Huh? The shop tells me that because of the wind, and load it is causing a lot os strain on my tranny, it's getting really hot and the fluid is expanding and coming out the vent tube in my enguine.

My last service to my tranny was 12 months, 15k ago, and I haven't left Northern Colorado, or been wheeling do to new family addition, nor had my vehicle loaded. I have had 3 oil changes at Jiffy Lube and they say they didn't add any tranny fluid and the service records state this. My tranny is in great shape, and there isn't any coolant or anything mixed in, tranny fluid is red and clear.

I called Toyota and they seemed to think it was possible for 12 months, 15k to go by without seeing anything until the vehicle was loaded etc... My regular service shop says "hell no" would have came out instantly.

What do you guys think? Possible? Thanks!

BTW, made it to Cal and back with no further complications after fluid was drained.

The whole story makes sense... Glad it worked out ok. Your '04 has a 4speed and a dipstick, right?


It's so sad the the servicing tech messed that up in the first place! :bash: :confused: If it is a dipstick model it isn't that hard...

I question the reason Toyota dropped the trans dipsticks. With the poor quality of the employees doing the oil and Lub. stuff at dealers today. It's not a surprise your trans was over filled. Back in 89 wife wanted me to stop doing my own service of oil&filter. Tried my dealer one time, they over filled the engine oil. Last time I let anyone do any oil&filter changing.:bash:

Ah, the beauty of the sink is you can use it for multiple purposes including driving right by those rest stops:lmao: I never leave home without one:)

After the internal pressure is relieved you even have a place to wash your hands:D

Hi,

Yes 4 speed with dipstick. I wish my HOA would let me work on the truck at home, so I could do all the work myself.

I figure some knucklehead checked with the enguine off thinking it's a Honda or something and then realized his blunder and didn't say anything.


YAYAYA Don't go to jiffy lube:dammit::dammit::dammit:
