Tranny issues.

Hey all out there! Ya'll might have had this question all the time but here it goes. My 2006 SR5 V-6 is 61000 miles strong and will still go on. My question is this. I have done all the maintenance myself since a bad dealer experience in 2007 and so far so good. The only area I have not addressed the transmission. I have been told it never needs maintenance. I think that its BS but I am not sure what to do. I have changed tranny fluids on diesel trucks all the time but I have never worked on a sealed trans. I want to use synthetic stuff like royal purple and others. also do I need a new seal, check the valve body, etc? most recently the truck will rev to 3 grand and take a while to change gear.:wtf:

Next study the sticky and links contained within at the top of Maint section titled "T4R Transmission Fluid Servicing...". There's several how-to tips and great links within.


I highly recommend doing something by 60k or so... :iagree:, the "never needs servicing" is BS :toilet3: I'd service the fluid first and see how it shifts before I worried too much. Good luck!

Well I just finished. it was a real trip! normally with the GM, Ford, and dodge trucks I work with its a simple drain, new seal, and fill. the toyota tranny was a "new experience" and educational 4 me. I drove it so it was warm and up to temperature and I took the whole tranny sump off. Even though I have never towed (But I do race it so maybe some credit to it.) the fluid was a dark color of which I have never seen in tranny fluid. And the smell was something else, granted it did smell like the Allison fluid in the duramax. I had then taken the chance since the truck was on the lift to lube the drive shaft and check everything else. I filled the tranny with royal purple max ATF and it does work well! I drove the SUV and it accelerates faster, shifts smoother and down shifts faster (I down shift it manually) Thanks 4 the help CJ3 your a big help!!

Glad it's all better... I can't emphasize enough how scary the promise of WS fluid is to me as someone who wants to break 200k with no major failures. I hope lots of people see these posts and change the fluid as if they tow...


I don't think you'd have much left to rebuild if you ran it to failure at 130k (or whatever mileage it quit). I guess that's what Toyota wants... The fluid may be fine but the whole concept of never needs servicing is flawed. All in the name of marketing...:sniper:
