Owner of a 1996 4runner says automatic tranny will not shift up into 3rd because of faulty kickdown cable. Reverse,1st and 2nd are fine. Any knowledge as to this kickdown cable. Thanks
Yeah, these are cable-driven vehicles, not electronically controlled.
Um, WRONG.
How Would the tranny kick DOWN cable, have ANY effect of it shifting up?
The Tranny kick DOWN cable is just for that. You step on the gas, WOT, and it kicks the trans DOWN in gear, so that it accelerates faster.
If it's not shifting UP, then you're looking at problems with your transmission. NOT your kick DOWN cable.
More than likely your transmission solenoids, or you have other problems.
Then why do people disconnect the kick down cable, and suffer no drive ability symptoms?
It's called a kick down cable because when you stomp the gas, that tells the trans to drop a gear or two.
All a tight kick down cable is goin to do is make the RPMs higher, maybe make the gears hang a little higher in the RPM, but it's not going to stop the trans from shifting into third or fourth gear.
You've got other problems besides a tight kick DOWN cable.
The Throttle Valve Cable is attached to the throttle linkage. When the throttle is depressed, the cable is "pulled" progressively with throttle position. In addition to providing forced downshifts (kickdown), and progressively later (higher speed) upshifts at higher throttle settings, the throttle valve also adjusts main line pressure in the transmission. Operating a transmission with the TV cable out of adjustment, can, not only produce early, or late upshifts, but incorrect line pressure, as well. What this means, in simple terms, is that TV pressure that is too low, will produce main line pressure that is also too low, and will eventually "burn" the transmission clutches.
