tranny popping out of first!

Hello all, from time to time when I go from a dead stop and begin accelerating, the transmission will pop and the stick will jump out of first gear and return to neutral. This happens right when i start letting out the clutch, I am not sure what it could be!!!!! Any ideas??

could this possibly be worn gears?? or simply me not fully engaging first gear, as this has only happened once in a while

It sounds like a bent or worn shifting fork, and yes its like its not going all the way into gear.

are shifting forks expensive do replace?? I am guessing you have to crack open the trans.

I have no idea as to price or availability, and I've never seen a Toyota trans. but certain things are the same in all transmissions.
You also could have worn shifter components. It depends on if the trans is a top shifter or a side shifter. If you could get that information I could tell you more , but generally there is a cover on the trans with the shifter components on it. This cover is removable but you probably would need to pull the trans to get at it easily. If its a side shifter there are bushings(usually plastic) which have linkage arms through them. These can wear or break over time causing the linkages to be loose. This can keep you from going all the way into a gear. Its also cheap to fix and you don't have to pull the trans.
