Tranny Problem ?

Hi folks, my son just bought a used 2001 4runner with 112k miles. At first we thought the tranny was slipping but now that I have driven it a little more I think it is rough shifting rather than slipping. Is it possible that it is just shifting a little rougher than other cars I am used too ?


What is the best way to check it out. Diagnostic center ? Tranny garage ? Other ?

Isn't it uncommon for a 4runner tranny to fail at 112k ?

Also, I am sort of mad because we brought the car to Toyota for a check out before we bought it and they did not flag the problem.

Any suggestions ?

By the way, any idea what a rebuilt tranny costs ?

The first thing to do is check the amount and the condition of the trans fluid.

If you are used to american made cars then yes you will feel the different with imports,they shifts harder specially the 2nd or 3rd gear.

Call me crazy but i mistaked engine hesitation for tranny slip(and so did all my car friends). Ended up swapping trannys with no luck, did plugs and wires and problem solved.

Guys, thanks all for your suggestions. I like the idea of checking the tranny fluid. I will do it and report back.
