My truck has been acting up...

Ive noticed it in 2WD on the street (not 4 hi or low because I havnt been it off roading sense)
Doesnt happen in 1st, mostly in 2-4th gear, when I try to get on it (in a 22RE terms, "go just a little faster" haha) she reeves up without accelerating, and I have to back my foot off the skinny and slowly push it back in to have her accelerate. It happens ALOT more when she is cold and almost gone when hot (driving for 20-30 min)

Im thinking dirty tranny fluid and fear a dying tranny... can anyone ease my fear or slap me with "you got a tanny swap in the near future"?

:help:

Rpms go up but truck wont go faster? Sounds like it needs a clutch. How many miles on the truck/clutch?

Edit: signature says its a manual.

Yes it is a standard, its the 4runner in my sig. Any ways to test to see which one it is?

Sorry im trying to learn the ways that are fixing it yourself.

Everyones gotta start somewhere! Did you download the factory service manual? There is a sticky for it on top of the Classics section.

There is only one clutch. It does involve taking the tranny out to change.

Best way to tell if it's the clutch is while moving to put the trans in a higher than normal gear and so that the RPM's are around 1000-1500 and floor it, if the RPM's increase but the vehicle speed does not, that indicates a slipping clutch and you will need to replace it.

I did download one from yotatech, I also have the haynes manual, and I have a 87 manual aswell I think

Changing the clutch is pretty simple, basically it consists of removing the trans cross member, disconnecting the driveshaft and unbolting the trans from the engine and replacing the clutch. It would be wise to have the flywheel either resurfaced or replaced while you're in there.

Whats the wallet damage for a clutch?

And yes that id whats happening to me, petal down in... lets say 3rd gear going 30 and petal to the floor it revs up and stays a consistent or ever so slightly faster speed

A clutch should be around $130, I think new flywheel is about 30-40. Check Rockauto.com They have pretty good prices.

no offense to the OP, but I don't think this is something you should try to do yourself.

it does indeed sound like the clutch is worn, and needs replaced. pulling the transmission and flywheel isn't terribly difficult, but putting it back in can be more of a chore. if you don't get the disc centered, you'll fight it, and never get the transmission back in, and possibly damage the new parts in the process.

You can find them anywhere from $100 (or less) to $350+

I went with this clutch on my 86 and it was awesome!

Awesome I might actually go that route! any suggestions on what else I should buy and replace when this all goes down? clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, HD bolts? Also any suggestions on a fly wheel?

Tax season is just around the corner so mind as well do it the right way, plus with this clutch I can do duel transfer cases with no fuss right?

I would most likely be going to a guy that has a lift, and ill have the mechanical help I need. Thanks for your concern and appreciate the input, I will make sure I do get the help when needed because damaging expensive parts is nothing to be messing with on a low budget.

Let's see when I replaced my clutch at 330K I did the following;

-New clutch
-Resurfaced flywheel
-New master cylinder (old one was leaky)
-New slave cylinder (old one was leaky)

Now would be an ideal time to replace all that. It may be a bit costly but it's worth it for the peace of mind.

I also think it would be a great idea to do it yourself. If you get stuck there are people on this forum wiling to help and if worse comes to worse, you can take it to a garage. It wouldn't cost more than if you took it there originally.

Any brand preference that I should look for when buying the master and slave cylinders?

I got mine through Marlin Crawler. Give them a call, they're very nice people to deal with.

And to answer your question from earlier, no clutch will affect your ability to install dual cases.

Awesome, I didnt know if the HD clutch would be necessary for dual cases.

And sorry for all the questions by the way, but would I want a NEW fly wheel or just resurface my current one? and whats the price for a resurfacing one? Because the fly wheel on marlin crawlers it 99.99 for a new one, I didnt know it it was just easier to get the new one?

Nope it is not necessary.

About the flywheel, only a machine shop will be able to tell you if it is worth having yours resurfaced or if it would be better to purchase a new one.

And no need to apologize for the questions, that's what this forum is for.
