Tranny swap has begun!

Tranny is out of the donor vehicle. Rented a gigantic tranny jack from the hardware store in town, 15 bucks for the day. Took maybe an hour to actually pull it, wasn't too bad at all.

Parking my 4runner in my garage and starting tomorrow on pulling mine. Hopefully I'll have the swap done by the weekend.

PS. That tranny jack weighed as much as the tranny! Holy F...

Doing the rear seal as well?
 
I went to return the tranny jack this morning. When I was just about to lift it out, I told the guy that I would probably need it again this weekend and he told me to just keep it until I'm done with it.

Apparently no one ever rents it? So that's cool...

I'll be starting after work today, I'm hoping to have my tranny removed and the new (used) tranny at least put in by Saturday AM.
 
I got my old tranny removed and the new (used) one put in. I just have the bell housing bolts snuggled up and the cross member in place, still have a bunch of shit to put back together.

Pulling the tranny out really is a piece of cake but getting the new one lined up is a total pain in the ass!

It took my buddy and I a good hour to get the damn thing in place. We were able to get it 95% lined up and started some of the bell housing bolts. We were able draw up the tranny by slowly snugging down each bolt.

Didn't go to bed until 1am and start work at 6. At least I'm making good progress!

Well fellas, she's all done.

Swap was a success, everything works great and no leaks.

This is not for the faint of heart but it is definitely doable. I removed both tranny's and tcase togehter, on the ground with no stands and tranny jack. I just jacked up the truck when it was time to wheel the tranny out. So in the last two weeks I removed 2 tranny's and installed one. I'm guessing 18-20 hours total.

Hardest part of putting it back together was getting the tranny lines hooked up, what a pain in the ass!

While I was at it, I drained the T case fluid, it actually looked pretty new still so that's cool. Filled it back up with Amsoil extreme gear lube 75/90w.

I tested it out, everything works as it should so that's cool.

Shout out to [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] and [MENTION=70753]badattitude[/MENTION]. Tim for the awesome video which helped a ton and Rob for selling me his wrecked 99 for a hell of a deal!

Awesome Mike. I know I'm the one who does most of the posting of new videos on this forum but don't forget [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] (aka Sean) for his contributions. He deserves half the credit for the creation of all the videos we produce.

Glad you succeeded in the swap. Just think of the money you saved, the knowledge you gained, and the sense of accomplishment tackling such a labor intensive repair. Great job Brother!

Very nice. It couldn't have been fun.

Amsoil is good stuff; it for some reason receives undue guff from many Internet fluid "experts".....
 
Fun job, eh?

Just finished pulling a motor/trans/t-case from our mildly wrecked '99. Those top 2 bellhousing bolts sure were fun. We tilted the trans "down" after loosing the motor mounts and found them easier to access that way.

Nice work and I fully agree with your write up....
