I do not notice a problem on mine at all. It seems the same as any other auto trans car I drive. What do you want it to do, stay in 5th when going 15 mph? It has to get down to lower gears at some point.

Are you driving down hill? Mine only does that on down hill and it's barely noticeable IMO.

I feel like its a good thing ,it senses the hill and only downshifts if you hit the brakes.has to be a certain incline,speed ,sect. Its even better in the tundra maybe because of newer technology in that trans , all I have to do is tap the brakes going downhill and it reads my mind. When it needs to shift it will , and when unnecessary it won't. I hate riding the brakes down long hills especially when towing.
From the replies, I can see where I stated the problem with not enough details. I don't mean normal downshifting when coming to a stop. Those shifts aren't even felt. I mean when i'm letting off the gas and just touch the brakes (especially on a decline) it drops several gears and the RPMs rev up. I'm wanting to coast and it's pulling the car down as though I downshifted a manual trans.

That's normal, it's the engine braking this truck has. If you're going down a hill, put it in Neutral (if it's safe to do so) and I think that will help you appreciate the engine braking much more.

If you are wanting to coast why did you hit the brakes? Hitting the brakes is what make it downshift. If you do hit the brakes and it downshifts slightly hitting the gas cancels the feature.

Maybe you want to coast...but you're on a hill that's so steep you actually gain speed, so occasionally you tap the brake. That's what happens to me. But nooooo....this trans. won't let that happen. Mine has actually downshifted all the way to 3rd and scared the crap out of me.
This might be a useful feature when towing...maybe...but when running unloaded it just consumes more fuel and is annoying.

Your best bet is to manually downshift a gear at a time as needed. I never leave mine in overdrive on mountainous roads.

Have you modified your suspension? If you put on a leveling kit, or lifted it, you may need to redo the zero point calibration. Toyota is very specific that it has to be done on a level surface (inclination within 1 degree)
I'm not really sure if this would change downshift points but it stands to reason that if the zero point is set then the front or rear height changes, the computer would always think the vehicle was slightly tipped. The true grade of a hill would not be measured by the computer.
Again, I was only philosophizing, I do not know if the transmission uses input from the yaw rate or acceleration sensors.
