Yup, that's a transmission rebuild. Could be a number of things though... valve body sticking, clutches, main ECU, etc.

I believe you're saying that you can go, but once moving you can't accelerate when you get to speed?

just got the phone call..

the code came back a shift solenoid is bad inside the tranny. parts and labor $ 907.00.

since i work for an auto group that has Toyota, my price is $ 690.00, but Toyota is picking up the part so its costing me $ 510.00 .

could be worse huh?

I'm surprised you came out pretty good. Transmission work isn't fun or cheap. Did you ever change the fluid in the transmission? How many miles are on it?

I never have

it has like 87,000 miles on it. we bought it with 36,000 on it. since they have to open up the trans to install solenoid, i would imagine they will change the fluid?

not fixed ye....gggrrrrr

well i picked up the 4runner yesterday and as i exited the highway, all the warning lights came on in the dash again. same as prior to replacing the trans shift solenoid E. PO986? , Toyota came and picked it back up. i just got off the phone with them and they told me that the same code is coming up on the scanner. they checked in parts and a different solenoid part# came up for that solenoid than what the scan tool said it was.

they had to contact Toyoya tech support to find out if they replaced the wrong solenoid or if in fact the solenoid they replaced is just defective.

so i am waiting not so patiently.

Looks like a new transmission after all....

put another solenoid in and still throwing codes. said the trans wiring harness seals are bad and fluid is getting onto wires and causing it to throw codes. i was told the harness is not made available by Toyota. they contacted their field rep to see if a harness could be made and wont know until at least monday if its possible. if not its a new trans. $2000.00 at least. unreal.

any ideas anyone ?

I just had mine replace under warranty. It was in the high $3000 range and man am I thankful that they replaced it. Mine had a stuck solenoid i think. My problem was only 1st gear. wouldnt shift and no reverse. also a slight grinding noise i think because it wanted to shift into second but 1st wouldnt let it. search "is my tranny history" to view the entire thread.

hello new transmission...
