Trans slip from Reverse to Auto ?

I have a 2008 4Runner

approx 52000 miles

Occassionally, I notice a pause between gears

Seems to only do it when I go from reverse to drive

I shift from reverse to drive

press down the gas pedal ... it starts to go (slowly) - then (and without mashing any harder on the pedal) it goes like you think it should

I'm not talking about hot rodding it, (I don't slam it from R to D, and mash the pedal to the floor)

Never towed anything ... at all

and -of course- it doesn't happen all the time, so I can never get it to happen when I take it to a shop.

Doesn't seem to matter if I've been out driving it for a couple of hours (warm) or if its first thing in the morning ...

Anyone else ever noticed an occassion problem like this ?

It's been serviced regularly, and all the fluids are fine.

Tranny fluid doesn't look or smell burnt (I'm familiar with some bad trannys on some Dodge / Chrysler products I've owned from the past)

Mine goes from reverse and pauses then slams into drive violently. I can usually catch it before it engages drive and throw it into neutral. I've taken it to Toyota numerous times, but to no avail. I recently flooded my transmission :dammit: and will be replacing it. Hopefully the donor vehicle didn't have the same issues.

Does it happen when going downhill by any chance? My old '03 did it, as does my current '06 when going down my street from my driveway every day.

It could just be you're between ideal gear ratios, so your truck needs to make its mind up about being economical or giving you more power, depending on how you press the gas

Sorry to hear about your troubles emelianenkov.
how did you manage to flood it?

My 03 also pauses during shifts between park and reverse usually this is followed by the loud sound of my brakes releasing (metal......creak):shrug:
I never could get them to not make noise when taking foot off brake even after caliper/pad/rotor/flush jobs... oh well its just noise...

Had the same thing on mine. Took it for a drive with a tech, they checked the trans fluid, said it was SLIGHTLY lower, and added a little--am happy to say that I haven't felt it since.

It had about 33K on it when I noticed it. Today it's at 40K.
