Transfer case differences.

I picked up a transmission and transfer case today (CL find) to install in my 98 limited. Once I got it home I noticed a slight difference. My 1998 had what looks like a vacuum/electronic unit on the back of the transfer case. The one I bought does not and appears to be fully manual 4x4 engagement even though the cases look identical. FWIW this is supposed to be from a 96 or 97.

Is this t/c compatible?

The 96-98 T-cases activate via a VSV, that explains the difference. The T-case should work but I cannot confirm it, some people have put a 96-98 on a 99-02, and visa versa with success, you will just also need the donor vehicle's 4WD ECU and wire harness.

But if I'm using a tcase from a 96-98, shouldn't they all be the same? The donor trans/tcase is 97. It's going into a 98.

The two cases work the same but method of engagement differs. I would just swap your old transfer case to the new transmission.

Did 96-98's have the multi-mode transmissions though? Thought that was a 99+ thing.

I'm only aware of the two I mentioned for those years. I have both a push button and a J shift 97 4Runner.

Multi mode had the full and part time option for high range, correct?

Gotcha, I thought the push-button was 99+ only on the multimode. That makes sense.

for the pre-1999 with 4WD button TCs, what does the 4WD button do? Is it for 4Hi?

I definitely got the jshift with the new trans. Needed the pushbutton. I couldn't use my old one because it was cracked. Found a pushbutton at a picknpull today (fingers crossed).
