Transfer Case Leak

I have never been able to find a breather for my t-case or auto tranny. I only have one breather tube in my engine bay and it goes to my front diff.

Think with your dip stick, Jimmy! :)

I suppose I should post pics of what I did with mine.

I have seen people's 4runners that have 2 tubes in the engine bay right next to eachother. I only have the one tube and the clip the holds the top is only made to hold one. I would like to see pics of where the breather leaves the tranny if you have any. I'm betting I have a breather somewhere right on top of the casing like the rear diff comes stock with.

I explained that in the writeup that got munched, along with the cure for cancer and global warming. :wink2:

... actually, I just noted that its kinda weird that some have them and some don't.

I'll try to get some pics up. Right now I'm in full wedding mode when I'm not at work (getting hitched on saturday)...

Got the driveshaft off, and now you can see the way the factory crimped on the nut so it wouldn't come off, and that's exactly my trouble now; I cannot get it off.

Brain, did you have this same trouble? Any ideas?

I have used all my weight on a breaker bar and it wont budge. I don't have an impact unfortunately. I have tried to pry open the little notch in the nut they made, but Im pretty sure its grade 8 or 10, so no luck yet with that.

I do have a replacement nut I bought at the dealer, they recommended it along with the new oil seal, now I know why. So I am not worried about tearing up this nut to get it off.

I just stuck the blade of a screwdriver against the crimped part and smacked it hard a couple of times with a BFH and it bent back out. I had an impact too so it spun off pretty easily. Now that I see the pic, I think I did replace that other seal behind the nut. It's been a while, but I mostly just remember going all over town all pissed off trying to find the correct bigger seal. :)

Yeah, I have been trying to get that crimp out of there like you said, I have ruined a couple of screwdrivers with no avail. Oh well, I will just keep at and I may try to borrow an impact from someone.

I have the bigger seal part in hand, hope its the right one; the dealer looked up parts using my VIN so it should be correct.

It's probably the right part if they looked it up with your VIN. I guess the crimped part on mine wasn't as crimped in as yours cuz I didn't have too much trouble with it. Maybe the guy who did the crimping in the factory fought with his old lady that morning and took it out on your crimp.? Do you have any nail sets or punches? Those might work better than a screwdriver.

You are welcome to use my impact. Holler at me this week. We can try to link up.

Thanks, I will give you a call later this week, but this week will be very busy for me at work. Im not sure if I can get to this again before next weekend (I'm driving my girlfriends car for now). But if I get more interest in my 4runner (now that it is for sale) I may just have Toyota of Dallas finish the job for me to expedite things.

Went out for a trail run yesterday and woke up today to find a puddle of gear oil under my T-Case. Pulled the stock "skid plate" and seems the front oil seal let go. Hopefully I can make it to the dealer tomorrow. I'll post some pics of the change when I get to it.

I actaully got my fixed today, I had my mechanic do it for me this morning since I couldnt get that nut off. Cost me $110 in labor...but oh well its fixed now! I also had him change the fluid in the t-case as well since he was at it.

Ordered my parts but the seals weren't in at the dealer. They weren't sure of the correct nut and I got one but it's definitely different than the one I need. Just wondering if I'm safe to pull my front driveshaft and use the truck for short distances (no further than the dealer and back)?

Hmm, did you give them your VIN? They can use VIN's to look up parts and it can be more conclusive.

Yes, you should be OK driving. But check the fluid and top off if you need to before you take off. Its easy, just remove the fill bolt and fill up with gear oil until it runs out, then replace the bolt. Also keep an eye on the fluid level each time you drive it, you can just keep a wrench and a bottle of gear oil with you to top off as needed if its leaking that bad.

Yeah I'm watching the fluid and have topped it up when I drove down this morning, I won't let it get too low. Did give them my VIN, but was in a rush to grab my brother on his way off from work. The parts person didn't seem to have much knowledge of it but I emailed a friend that normally works at the parts desk and everything is sorted out now.

Just want to pull driveshaft and get things ready, see if I can get anywhere with that crimped nut. Didn't know if the front diff bearing needed to be preloaded by the driveshaft or anything else like that though

Yeah, if you can get the nut off you will be ahead of the game, at least in my experience. Not sure after that though, as I didn't get that far. You may need a puller to get the flange off, again not really sure since my mechanic finished the job for me.

But when I attempted it I did not remove the front drive-shaft completely. I just disconnected it from the transfer case and moved it to the side. You can do this if you remove the grease zerk, which will relieve the pressure when you push/pull the drive-shaft off the bolts on the flange. Hope that makes sense. Just be prepared with a rag or something to catch some of the grease as it oozes out of the hole where the zerk was. ( I wasn't, and caught all the grease on my shirt)

Just remember to pump some more grease in there when you reattach everything.

(EDIT: This probably doesn't need to be said, but if you are just going to prep it for the work to be done elsewhere, then you need to remove the drive-shaft completely, or reattach before you drive again.)

Got it without too much trouble. Smacked a 2x4 to try and knock the front end of the DS off the flange before I thought of the zerk fitting. Compressing it wasn't working so well before that :) Then I wrestled trying to remove what I'm assuming are studs on the transfer case flange that did not want to be removed via wrench. Then I spent some time with a 2x4 hitting just in front of the flange and finally slid a screwdriver between the flange and the DS and a very gentle turn and some more liquid wrench got them appart.

I'll have some pics up, and let you know how the process goes tomorrow.

Haha, sounds good to me, whatever works right?! I wresteled with it too before I removed the grease zerk, then it was easy, except for the grease all over my shirt! oh well, live and learn.

And yeah, if you were able to compress that drive-shaft without removing the grease zerk you are superman!

Got all my seals today and changed them out. Was much easier than I was expecting it to be and I say that with having very limited experience working on vehicles. I took some pics the whole way through and if anyone wants I can do a quick write up and explanation. Definitely a DIY job for those who are unsure of it.
