Hello all,
I'm looking to buy my second 4R and it's a 99 Limited, 129k miles, mint leather seats, with locking rear diff. However, there's an issue. The problem is that when you first start the truck, transmission engages and it drives normal. After about 1 minute or so, it begins to slip and won't move in drive or reverse.
I tried to switch the transfer case to engage 2HI - 4HI or 4Lo and the light on the dash just blinks. It would not engage at all. Turning off the truck for a minute and then starting it again, immediately shifting in drive and moving it will drive normally, but then after a minute it will slip and won't move in drive or reverse.
The owner says the transmission oil was changed at a local shop 4 months before this problem started to occur. I checked the transmission oil dip stick and the level is very high above the hot mark, I would say it's about halfway, almost 5/8 of the way up the stick. I checked the two vacuum switches and there is vacuum coming from the main hose that splits to the two switches. I pull off the vacuum lines coming from the transfer case to the switch and there is a vacuum coming from the hose that connects to the switch further front of the truck.
What do you guys think? Is this a simple transfer case not engaging problem or is the transmission done for?
