Transmission Disintergration

1997 Limited 4WD, automatic, 195,000mi.

Loud clanking from transmission. No acceleration after transmission has warmed up, will eventually get transmission hot light. Reverse works. Dropped the tranny pan and found these. Are these pieces of thrust washers? CEL is pulling P0770 code x2. (suggesting both solenoids are out). Any advice would be much appreciated. Out in Oahu about to deploy so was gonna leave this with the wife but have to fix this first. Went ahead and pulled the valve body and don't see any discrepencies. Thanks, James

That's bad news right there. I don't know what those pieces are but I would say a rebuilt or used transmission is in your future.

Looks like part of the clutch disks. Which would explain why you have no forward movement.

A rebuild is the cure.

AW4 Tranny

Looks like you are correct Shadow and Opie. $3800 qoute from the shady shop here in Kaneohe for a rebuild and 3 year warrenty. Found one off ebay - which if any of you are interested in an IPT valve body its the only one I've seen being sold (ebay item:130624541272). Long story short, got a local craigslist hit on an aw4 for 100$. Gonna grab it and do the dance. Worst case scenario it doesn't work, at which I'll order a master rebuild kit and do it myself. No matter which course of action, I'll provide a writeup. Any advice swing it this way, did verify the 3080 stamp on both mine and the aw4 tranny cases.

I found the same piece in my pan. Just got a quote for 1700 on a rebuild. Did you end up doing this yourself?

The messed up part about mine, everything was fine. And Valvoline used my truck for a demo at my work.

Whiskey Runner - Yes I am in the process of doing this rebuild myself. I will post some pics but it is a job. I just now this morning dropped the transmission, but I have done the entire job by myself so it's not impossible. Also, if anyone has the link to a a340f service manual that would be awesome before I drop 30$ on it.

When the washer broke apart the O/D clutch rubbed the direct clutch raw. Look like this side is fine. The other side, well I'm gonna bust out the one in an AW4 tranny I got and compare them.

Visited the dealer and the part that is broke on mine and Whiskey_runner is the 'clutch drum thrust washer' , toyota part number 35616-30050. $7.50 after HI taxes. This also comes in the rebuild kit supposedly but I ordered one anyways.
