Transmission Drain & Fill Question

So, I know there have been a few posts about this over the last few days. But I kinda needed a specific answer. I'm getting ready to do a drain and fill on my truck today and I wanted to know. When I take off the drain plug, am I only expecting about 3 to 4 quarts to be drained? I shouldn't be expecting the entire transmission to drain, right? Only what's in the pan? Then from there I'll just fill with about 1/3 more than what came out, warm up the engine, and check the overflow plug?

Mine drained almost exactly 3 quarts. I just measured closely and refilled the same amount, but did not check the overflow. No subsequent issues with shifting. My understanding is that the trans need to be in a very specific temp range to check the overflow. There's a somewhat convoluted process for that which you can search for a thread here.

Be VERY careful when removing and replacing the drain plug. The pan is very prone to stripped threads.

I also concur on the drain, fill, and level check plugs, I would recommend that they be torqued to the proper value.
