Hello, first post. Check engine, trac off lights came on the other day as well as flashing terrain select. Transmission was acting very weird, torque converter would lock up in 2nd, didn't want to downshift. Took it to dealer, looks like failed shift solenoid. 2013 TE with 6700 miles, gently driven. They are replacing the entire transmission. Anyone else heard of transmission issues on 5th gens?

What part of Oregon are you from? I grew up in Madras and went to school in Corvallis.
As far as you tranny goes.... there has to be some sort of attrition and it looks like to got the lemon. you may want to make sure you are getting a new transmission, not a 2008 reman.

Why? Vehicle in question has less than 7000 miles, and this is probably the first failed transmission I have heard of in nearly 10 years of production for several models, including the high volume Tacoma.
The only way he can get a NEW trans is if the car was never sold. Even if the car would have 50 miles it gets a reman... But anyways we never see any issue's out of the 5th gens.

I was just saying that if anyone has this issue later with the solenoid going bad, having an extended warranty for a little peace of mind is good. I should of said just warranty instead of extended warranty. I understand it failed at 7000 miles, but that does not mean that it won't fail for someone else later after the initial warrant is up. There is a failure rate with parts that is common that is based on parts per million (PPM) that out of every 1 million transmissions built, 1.6 will fail prematurely. The question is will your vehicle be in that 1.6 (PPM) category. Toyota makes really good parts, but when these solenoids are made on an assembly line, there is a failure rate that is tracked and sometimes parts that did not pass, slip through the cracks into the shipping crates due to human error. This error is few and far in between but it is nice to have extended warranties to purchase to make sure that whenever something fails prematurely, whether being when it happens at 7000 miles or 70,000 miles, you have piece of mind especially with a purchase this large. I always believe mechanical parts will fail at some point as the vehicle get close to 100,000 miles due to wear and tear. We always hope that we make it without having any major issues but sometimes we don't make it. I had a 1999 Nissan Maxima I purchased with 25,000 miles on it and 2 years old. 3 of my spark plug solenoid went out at 50,000 miles, and I had them all replaced under extended warranty as the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty had passed and I was thankful that I purchased the extended warranty.
Spoke with the service rep (tanner) here at Toyota of bend. He stated that all parts would be new, transmission and torque converter. He could be blowing smoke, or misinformed, but I don't see why Toyota would want to screw around with putting used parts into vehicles still under warranty. Apparently the the transmission and torque converter do not come as an assembly, but separate. Unfortunately I'll be out of town while the work is done, would have liked to see it.
So are all parts replaced under warranty replaced with remanufactured parts? Is this standard in the auto industry or just Toyota?
The parts are new just rebuilt, Not a new brand new trans.. Plus ALL trans from toyota reman or new come with a torque converter... We just replaced one in a 5th gen 4runner for shifting issues.

You need to go ahead and explain the huge difference between a remanufactured unit and a repaired unit before you scare someone.

It has been a while since I have read the warranty booklet, but I believe it states at Toyota's discretion that may replace with new or remanufactured and your original warranty still exists, however, if your original warranty is about to expire or has already expired the replaced part is good for twelve months or 12,000 miles.

I would trust him, my family has had great dealings with Bend Toyota for many, many years. Glad to hear it's being taken care of...

I thought that a manufacturer replaced parts under their discretion, and most transmissions and other large mechanical units like t-cases and torque convertors were remans.
I know when my transmission failed on my FJ Cruiser, twice, Toyota did not use new units to fix it. The dealer even said so.

I understand the difference between new and remanufactured, and I am fine with either- I still have lots of warranty left. I would just think that in the end it would be a better bet for Toyota to go with new off the line parts. I believe the transmission is at the dealership as of yesterday. I have not heard of transmissions coming without torque converters, maybe that is an indication that they are in fact new parts. I will give and update.
