Transmission for 01

I just bought a 2001 4Runner with a messed up transmission. I am saving up to get a brand new tranny for her but would like to drive her around before I get the new tranny. I am trying to find a used tranny but from what everywhere is telling me I can only use a tranny from an 01-02 4runner. My question is can I use a tranny from other year models or is the 01 and 02 the only years I can use. You help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Figure out what trans you have and go from there. 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? Inside of the driver door the sticker lists what trans type it is. A340F or a340E. I wouldn't drive it just park it and get another or rebuild it. Camelback toyota has one for roughly 2g but IPT transmission in NJ can rebuild them to be bullet proof for 2800. I had mine rebuilt locally and 10k miles so far its still running great

You can only use a 2001-2002 tranny regardless of it being a 4wd or 2wd. In 2001 Toyota switched to a different valve body setup and earlier years will not work because they are not compatible with this new setup. The older models(96-2000) have a kick down cable connected to the throttle body whereas the newer model(2001-2002) have an electronic version w/o the kick down cable. Ask me how I know. :-/ Build thread pg.1
