I bought a 92 v6 3.o a couple months ago and on the highway it would not shift in to the last gear for about 10-15 mins i checked the tranny fluid and added some it still kept doing it then i drove about 40 mins on the highway and the A/T temp light came on i then searched the form and i decided that i may have over filled the tranny so i drained it ( it did not have a heavy burnt smell but definitely was old fluid) ran for a week and changed again. yesterday i drove again for a while on the highway and a few hills nothing major and it came on again i pulled over put it in park and waited for 10 mins light stayed on so i turned it off and had lunch. 30 mins later i came out and noticed my radiator was leaking just a little wet spot so i popped the hood and after looking at stuff noticed the cap was turned a little i tightened it and closed the hood then i noticed the hood hits the cap ( another issue to look in to now)
. started the car light was off so i continued on my way up some hills nothing crazy but the light stayed off. another thing is Ive had the tranny down shift on me doing 65 and not pressing the petal to make it down shift.
Thank you in advance.

classic case of overdrive temp sensor. as you drive down the highway the radiotor cools the coolant as it should and once it drops below 172 degrees the overdrive sensor shuts down and downshifts.

put a small peice of aluminium sheet about 2 inches tall and all the way across the radiotor in the front on the bottom. this will deflect the wind wile driving at high speeds and it wont effect temps at low speeds. if you keep the temp up while at high speed the OD will stay on.

next time do a search on transmission downshifts while at high speeds and youll get the results you need.

OD saves gas its like the 4th gear and with OD off you vehicle acts like a 3spd for towing
4spd means lower RMP at high speeds.
when the coolant is too cool the OD doesnt work and the tranny downshifts to 3rd and your sucking gas.

Mmm. I disagree, and not sure if you made it through his entire first post.

He says the A/T Oil light comes on after driving on the highway. That wouldn't happen if this were a case of over cooling. The AT transmission should be able to handle highway speeds in both OD and Non-OD. You get worse MPG for sure, but if your A/T Oil light is on, then you have an entirely different issue.

Overfilling would cause that, I suppose; but are you sure it is overfilled?

2nd. Placing aluminum foil to intentionally block air flow is a horrible way to handle the situation. That is a back woods, need to get off the trail, kinda fix. Your cooling system, when operating correctly, should not over cool. The sound of you not hitting OD, if that is the cause, is easy if someone replaced the thermostat with an incorrect, or cheap one. I had this issue when I purchased a 2nd gen. The previous owner had replaced the Thermo with a cheap aftermarket. Those tranny's are very temp sensitive, as in, it needs the coolant to be a specific TEMP before it will allow OD to engage. I bought a OEM from toyota and fixed the problem.

At NO time during my issue did my A/T Oil light come on. My coolant may have been to cold for the transmission to let me slip into OD, but it ran perfectly in the lower gear.

My point.... you have something else wrong. The foil coolant blocking method should not be considered a serious fix.... you should attempt to figure out what is actually wrong.

A slipping/or bad OD clutch lockup could be the culprit.

Has the truck AT light come on again?

DC runner the light has not come on since yesterday even on the ride home. I even drove in 4 low and 4 high on a very easy dirt road for 3.3 miles then it was another 50 or so home. I notice it only has come on after about 45 miles. my temperature gauge reads half way the whole time. before i drained the tranny the first time it was overfilled by about .5 of a quart. and it has only down shifted on me twice just thought i would mention it so there would be all the symptoms that has happened. im very stoked to have a 4wheel and would like it to be solid for a family car to take great adventures.
Thank you for your imput.
