i need an automatic tranny for a 99 4runner 4x4. looking at salvage yards they show a difference before and after 6/99. my tranny serial number shows it was built in nov 1998. my truck shows it built in nov 99. i purchased used and based on gasket sealant i can tell at some point the tranny and transfer case have been split. did someone install a 98 in there and it works or did aisin(builds the toyota tranny)start building these early in preparation of 6/99.. does anyone know what the difference is before and after 6/99??

Pretty sure there are only two transmissions used in the 3rd Gen. Should have been from 96-00, and 01-02. While they'll all bolt up the same, the valving is different between the two.

96-98, 99-00, and 01-02. Not quite sure what the post and pre 6/99 differences are, though. It isn't the first time I've heard about this either.
