OK I bought my wife an 08 Urban 4runner last month...We have had this weird issue happen several times now. When in reverse and putting into drive it takes several seconds for it to go into drive. We can press the gas and the engine revs, but the vehicle does not move. Any ideas? I have an appointment for later in the week at the dealer...

I am not say your car is normal, I don't know. I am saying "normal" is a bit different in the case of the T4R.

This may be a different issue, but my '04 (and other 4th gen V8's) will sometimes slip a little and then engage harshly when going from R to D. I noticed that if I pause in N for a second or two, instead of going straight past it to D, it never has this problem.
Now when I back up, I move the shifter from R to N a little early and let the vehicle coast for a few feet before applying the brake and shifting to D.

All of Toyota's design oversights are dismissed as "normal" or "within specs". Generally when Toyota's engineers screw up, we all live with it unless there's a class action lawsuit. It sucks, but that's how Toyota's "warranty" works.

I'm wondering if the fluid is possibly low? Its hard to tell, since there is not freaking dipstick, and there is a lengthy procedure on how to top up the fluid anyways.
Is there a low level alarm for the trany fluid?
Anybody else have any suggestions for fixes?
