Transmission Noise

I have triple checked the fluid level, it's been making the same noise but to a lesser degree for 40k or so but now it's getting substantially worse. Any ideas as to what it may be? Only thing aftermarket is an external cooler. http://youtu.be/HiUlBwej3gM

What's the fluid like? Sounds like the torque converter, and since you're in neutral that furthers that theory. You might be able to prolong its life by changing the fluid (drain/refill the pan, drive it for a few weeks and repeat). If that doesn't help keep it going for a few 1000 more (and eventually the converter WILL die if it sounds like that now) then replace the torque converter and I'd put money down that that fixes it.

I've had lots of similar issues, finally the converter almost totally stopped transmitting power and this summer I replaced it with a ~$120 one from O'reilly and everything is working great again.

The noise is the converter falling apart and it eventually doesnt lock and it throws the lock solenoid code. I didn't mess with replacing the solenoid.

mine in my 02 limited sounded like a bad alternator, I replace it with a Toyota reman. believe it or not Toyota was the cheapest route to go. wasn't a tranny shop that would even take it apart.

I would get a cheap stethoscope ($3-4 harbor freight) and pinpoint the source. It will sound Much louder when you place the tip on the source compared to other areas. Sounds to me like it could be a stretched transfer case chain. :cowboy:

Update: Noise is still there. No other adverse effects. Seems to get worse with time.

Also if it were the T-case chain it wouldn't do it sitting still, correct?

I used to think the rattling mine made was caused by a stretched transfer case chain until I noticed 2 loose bolts on the Dynamic Dampner attached to the case. Tightened to 28 ft lbs and all good. Its something to eliminate real quick.

Right the chain doesn't move while the vehicle is sitting still so s/b no noise then If that is what it is. Luck.
