For an automatic you need to use the correct type specified in the user manual and stamped on the dip stick. I've only seen it for sale at the dealer but it's the same price there as the generic type at auto parts stores, just $4/qt at my local dealer, Earnhardt in Phoenix. Surely there must be a Toyota dealer somewhere in Ghana?
 
Does it have a dipstick? If so, it most likely takes type T-IV. The 75w-90 is for the differentials and transfer case if its 4wd. For the trans you can get it on eBay, Toyota brand if no dealer close by. Or an equivalent. The gear oil, most like Mobil 1 or redline or amsoil. All personal preference.
 
I also have a 2004 V8 SE model and just picked up a bunch of parts from the dealer today as I am doing timing belt, water pump and a bunch of maintenance to the truck tomorrow... I tried to buy the tranny oil/fluid and they said they they would not sell it b/c the dealer HAS to perform the service... Something acout monitoring the correct temp or something.

Are they feeding me full of a bunch crap???
 
Yep. Even if its world standard (WS) fluid you can do it. Just did mine this weekend. Plenty of how to's on here about the procedure..first you need to determine what fluid yours takes. Does it have a dipstick?

Just did a lot more research... No dipstick for me which = ATF-WS needed for my runner! Been wanting to order the Scangauge II, so might as well do it now to help me properly change the fluid at he correct temps!

No problem. Just in case you didn't see it, it is possible to know the temps without a gauge by putting it in temp check mode by jumping two pins on the obd II connector..
 
Hi All,
The pictures below shows my dip stick and the oil I got. Is this the transmission oil I need? Also, my existing transmission oils color is red... Is the the ideal color?

2004 V8 takes WS transmission oil according to my owners manual. I'm having some issues with my transmission.
When it's cold about -10 Celsius my toyota needs about 10 kilometers of driving to get on 5th gear no matter how fast I drive. That's annoying especially while I'm doing 100km/h on a highway where rpms are about 2500.
I did drain and fill last week and I'm going to do that one more time. So far nothing changed. My car still drives on 4th gear so long. Any suggestions?
 
Transmission # A750F uses WS; transmission # A340 uses Type IV fluid. I confirmed at the dealership. Just got 14 quarts of WS to do a flush.

What you are describing is normal behavior. The trans is designed to not up-shift into OD until the engine temp reaches a set level.
 
Hi All,

I hope this post finds you well. just a follow up to the ATF - IV and 75w90 required for my transmission change.

1. For the ATF type IV, I got this recommendation but I was wondering if these options, Toyota branded will suffice. This one sold by a seller on Amazon and this sold by Amazon, all of them cheaper than the recommendation

2. From this post, I see I need about 4.5 quarts to drain all and replace

3. For the 75w90, are these the only options I have? What quantity do I need? Mobil 1 104361 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart or Red Line 57904 (75W90) Synthetic Gear Oil - 1 Quart
