Transmission pan vs stump

TRANSMISSION FLUSH w/ dented pan

I went to do the ATF flush from cooling lines. Thanks again for this post 46runner..... awesome write up.

But when I went to get started I found that either me or my boy must have done a little stump jumping lmfao.

The fitting in the photo is a plastic 1/2" barbed hose fitting by 3/8" MPT (standard tapered pipe threads). It fit nicely in the fill hole with a little teflon tape. The threads were an extremely close match, but I wouldn't recommend a metal fitting. I was able to route hose up through engine compartment (being careful to stay off exhaust) and quickly add atf through a funnel from above. I originally bought a 90 degree fitting (3/8" hose barb by 3/8" MPT) but didn't have room to screw it in. I think the same 3/8" hose that 46runner used for the flush would work just fine too. It filled very fast with the 1/2" hose.

I was definitely lucky that the transmission wasn't damaged. The shifting seemed to be just a little bit off at times, but I really think that is because it was in dire need of a flush. I didn't know any better over the years and just did a drain and fill here and there. It is running smooth as silk since the flush. 160k miles. I think some skid plates are in my near future lol.

My only concern is how critical does the vehicle have to be level to get an accurate fluid level check? I have the daystar 1.5/2.5 spacer lift/leveling kit installed. I just made sure my frame was level. Figured that'd be close enough.

I hope this helps someone. I have gotten sooooooo much amazing information from all of you guys. Thanks fellas!!!!!!!!!!

Almost forgot... another little trick I found was that when I did the fluid level check that 46runner described, I was unlucky and was a little low still. But I had a small hand pump and the small hose fit snug into the level check hole, so I was able to quickly top it off from underneath. Even though I was careful to route the fill hose away from anything hot, I was still nervous and removed it before bringing the tranny up to temp for fear that the hose or fitting might get too hot. It probably would have been ok... I could keep my hand on the pan when the A/T Temp light came in steady for the fluid check.
