We recently began having problems with our automatic transmission in our Toyota 4runner. While we were out on a long trip, the check engine light came on and gave us a P770 and P773 code. It wasn't really acting funny, but maybe shifting kind of hard from 2nd to 3rd. So we took it to a transmission shop, which said it was a bad solenoid and that we could go ahead and replace them all and it would be good for another 100,000 miles. We got it home, and everything seemed fine, except for reverse, which was now sticking and I had to give it a lot of gas to get it to back up. Then, on another trip a few days later, the check engine light came back on with a P770 code, and it started shifting hard and sometimes shuddering when we would come to a stop. We took it back to the shop and the mechanic said there is a lot of metal in the filter (like pretty much clogged) and we may be looking at a replacement of the clutch/torque converter- which runs $1400 (in addition to the 650 we have already paid for the solenoid kit). It wasn't acting strange before the replacement of the solenoid kit, nor was there any metal in the filter when they did the solenoid replacement last week. Is it possible that the way the shop replaced the solenoid kit caused the clutch/torque converter problem? Or maybe the transmission fluid they put in? It seems odd to me that this problem popped up AFTER we had the transmission worked on. I would really appreciate any help or advice or knowledge understanding what's going on with my 4runner.
