Transmission question

4runner drives and shifts great..... unless you floor it. What would cause this? Again everything seems fine, shifting smoothly...but if I floor it ..it won't shift.

Is the transmission controlled by a cable, kickdown cable? If so, it's too tight. Had this problem on a Jeep many years ago. Would hold out gears and just hit redline until I adjusted the cable, then it was perfect.

I don't own a 3rd gen so I really don't know but that's my experience in the past. There would be a cable running from the throttle body down to the transmission. I'm sure someone with a 3rd gen will chime in.

l concur, it's most likely the kickdown cable. If it stays in too big of a gear, the cable is too loose. If it downshifts at a drop of a hat, it is too tight.

I actually like how it drives with the cable just slightly overtightened, so no slack at all in the cable.

Well I apologise guys. Don't think it's the transmission. Tightened up the kickdown cable and no change. Then I noticed it only did it when I'd hit right at 4000 RPM. In looking around the forum it looks like it could be a bunch of different things. Any recommendations on where to start? Not getting any warning lights and again it's running good other than at high RPM where it feels like it's missing.
