Transmission question

I purchased a 2002 4WD 4Runner with 143K miles on it a couple of weeks ago. When it is cold, the transmission won't shift into OD unless I let off of the gas pedal. Once it is warmed up, about 5 minutes, it shifts like a dream. I have read where this is normal for these engines. The 3.4L is reportedly very durable and dependable. Does anyone think that the shifting is normal ?
