Who said you can't?
Technically, they are sealed with 'life time fluid'...under normal circumstance...but who here drives normally?
You can change the fluid, but it takes a 'procedure' (and maybe special tools) to make sure it is filled to the right level.
Some here have just measured what was drained out and put back back in the same amount.
You can search this forum...several have done it or there are some videos on Youtube as well.

My 4runner had no previous records of a transmission service when I bought it and I just had mine "flushed" last week at the dealer with 160k miles. I was not too worried about anything, as long as your transmission has no issues and shifts smoothly and perfectly, you should be good to go.

The transmission can be serviced like any other transmission. The difference is instead of a dipstick you'll have a fill plug on the side of the transmission and a level check process that is different, it uses a level check tube in the trans pan that basically lowers the fluid level when the volume at prescribed temperature is over the tube level. Eric the car guy on youtube goes through the procedure on a V8, which has the exhaust y pipe being removed to get the pan off and change the filter. Yes, not changing the fluid could shorten the lifespan of the transmission and all the other issues that go with that, hard shifts, shudder, ect.
At 121,000 miles, you could go the extra remove the pan and change the filter too, you could do the flush without changing the filter, or you could do a simple drain and fill. I also added the Lucas transmission fluid conditioner.

Hi, I just saw this video and it is the same procedure for the 4runner transmission maintenance, this one is from a FJ cruiser.

I'm with [MENTION=176643]Supersonic[/MENTION] in that, at your mileage, I would certainly consider dropping the transmission pan and changing out that filter. If not, I'd be going with a full fluid exchange to ensure all of the old transmission fluid gets out.
