Transmission Replacement Question

So the 4runner I went to look at in Jersey a few days ago ended up being a rust bucket. But I found a 1999 with the Highlander Package and 92k miles for $3500. It does need a transmission though. My question is are the transmissions for all 3.4 4x4 3rd gens the same? I have been looking on ebay for replacements. Any idea what I should expect to pay for labor?

I'm in the Baltimore Area. Do you know how much of that $1200 was labor and how much was the actual transmission. Do you know if the trannys are identical between years?

All of the 3rd gen transmissions are the same. The automatic is the called the A340f for the 4x4 and the A340 for the 2x4 and the Manual is the R150f for the 4x4 and R150 for the 2x4. Now givin, I did do all the labor myself but I did an auto to manual trans. swap for $600 and that includes the ECU, wiring harness, bellhousing, front and rear driveshafts, transfer case and transmission.

There are some differences in the multimode '01 & '02 trannies and some of the '99s as compared to the '96-'98 A340Fs. I know the filters aren't the same and bolt up in a totally different pattern and the inlet/outlet holes are in different spots. They may all be compatible w/ eachother, I don't know for sure, but I doubt that the ECUs are exactly the same.

I thought the tranny was going out on my 97 sr5 with 159k, so I called the local tranny shop here in Tulsa. He said there were two different transmissions for the 4runners, one has two pans, the other has a single pan. The double pan was going to cost between 1500-1800 for a rebuild the single pan was going to be 2100-2600 to rebuild. Those prices both include removing it and reinstalling it. The name of the shop in Tulsa is called Aspen Transmissions, they build all the racing transmissions for the corvettes here in Tulsa....good shop.

Anyway, it was just a quart low on fluid.....

I've never heard of a dual pan trans for a 4runner.
