Transmission Temperature PID?

Ok so I just bought an OBDII reader from Amazon, downloaded Engine Link:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/engine-link-obd-ii-vehicle/id591557194?mt=8 and entered the formula found here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...rans-fluid-temp-other-things-your-iphone.html but am not getting a reading.

Does anyone have any info on how to get trans temp with a wifi OBDII reader? I tow a few times a month and am curious to see what temps my transmission hits. Thanks all.

EDIT: Have also tried the first two entries in the spreadsheet found here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/154351-5th-gen-extended-pids-torque-app.html and nada.

the question is which wifi did you get? I much prefer bluetooth but i guess wifi is the way around apple bluetooth lockout.

why did you go with that app?
I understand Torque is the way to go with android devices but havent looked much into IOS
 
Whoa talk about a throwback! Being that this was a couple years ago I honestly can't remember what I did. Once I'm off work later I can take a look at my links in the original post and see if I remember what I did to get it working.

The big question is how accurate is that measurement? I recall some people did the same thing with the Scangauge in the 4th gen forums, but the measurement was not entirely accurate.

Yep. I was one of those guys that plugged it into my Scan Gauge (which now resides at the bottom of my tool box since getting a Carista) in my 2003. According to the tech at Toyota of Boerne, it looked like it was off by about 20F. He had placed a probe in the tranny after changing the trans fluid out of curiosity and my blessings. ...and all of this is from vague memory since it was 4 years ago. So, salt grains may be applied.

if the Toyota tech's probe was used to measure the tranny temp , I would suggest it was out of CALIBRATION.. THESE potable type probes/measuring devices require frequent calibration . The measuring sensors in the vehicle usually work well for a long time and measure accurately ..then the position of the sensor probe that also will cause issue on accuracy..

The scan gauge and other OBDII readers read the sensors in the vehicle . so the PCM of vehicle is seeing what the OBDII reader is displaying.
 
There are 2 measurements for the trans temp too. So it depends on which one you are reading. The pan temp stays fairly consistent. The temp from the fluid coming out of the torque converter can vary quickly depending on the load and TC lock status.

The PIDs are out there, i'll find them and post them in a bit. I used them on the torque app and they worked fine.

I use the obd fusion app as well. You can pay to have all of the PIDs in there. It also works well. Although it says it has an engine oil temp measurement, it really doesn't.
 
Here are the torque settings for the 4runner. Ignore the Tacoma as it is invalid.

I'm not disagreeing with you there, but the thing we all need to remember is the scantool lies unless proven otherwise.

Scantool data is interpreted from what the ECM thinks is actually happening. Until you've verified that the scantool is correctly interpreting the data and the ECM is correctly registering the data it's outputting, interpretation errors are possible.

IF the measurement is within a couple degrees of say either a direct measurement of the fluid or a TIS Techstream (assuming the vehicle is working properly which is probably a fair assumption), then I wouldn't question it.

But having skimmed over a few scangauge threads on how they obtained and backwards calculated the PID, there's plenty of room for error there. Also considering there's an AT1 and AT2 temperature PID that can be up to 20*F in difference.

I have the AT1, AT2 setup for the 4runner and driving around with it operating it will at times read the same .. at other times different. pan temp changes slowly torque converter changes faster .

at idle in neutral , the pan and torque converter temps get to read about the same.

I also use this scan gauge in my GM vehicles have this programed for those as well.

when you apply an external temp reader it may indeed read a different temp .. I would also expect this to read different .
The only reason I got the scan gauge was so I can set the tranny fluid level ..

the TIS computer program should read the same as the scan gauge . I have not gone to that point yet to see if the PCM read of temp with the TIS is the same as a scan tool read...

these tools read as you say , what the sensors report to the PCM.. PCM could have a problem and if so , can effect engine management if it interprets the sensor reads wrong .

on the accuracy what I found was when the air temps did not change and the vehicle sat unused in my 4runner , the tranny temp and air temp was the same so it must be working good for me...

SO if the air temp is not changing for several hours and the vehicle has not been driven for 24 hrs and the tranny temps both at1/at2 read the same as the air temp I am good with that accuracy ..

can very well be , some did screw up !!!

ON my GM vehicles it is also programed for those .. also the tranny temp is also reporting the same temp as the air temp when sitting for more than 24 hours .. 3 vehicles it works very good....

I do have another scan tool reader - diagnostic tool so I can check that it reports the data of the vehicles then compare that they both indicate the same readings...

these tools are well worth the cost saves time and $$$..
 
Sorry to bump such an old thread

I figured it out and wanted to let everyone know.

Torque lite does not allow custom pid from what I can tell.

Torque pro does and it worked like a charm with the settings mentioned in countless other threads
