Transmission/Transfer Case Crossmember

Hi All,

I was crawling under my truck yesterday and while inspecting the transmission mount I noticed another mount bolted to the rear of the transfer case (see picture). This mount is bolted directly to the rear of the transfer case and is currently hanging in free space. This may seem crazy but am I missing a second crossmember or did a previous owner put a 2wd truck crossmember on the truck (if there is even a difference)? Shouldn't this mount be attached to something?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response. It may be just that but based on my knowledge of vibration I'd expect it to be insulating the cabin in some way, which means mounted to the frame. I've tried googling for this and am not turning up much.

Does anyone have a similar drivetrain combo who is willing to look under their truck to see what their setup is?

I can tell you that my '87 truck with 22re/w56 trans does not have this bracket.

Looked under my '11 4runner and nothing like that either! :shocked:

Well count me surprised. I have no idea how that is supposed to help with high frequency vibrations, but I guess I'll keep it on there. I suppose that means it is time to replace the transmission mount to kill this vibration. Thanks for you help

I think it might be either a 3vze and/or R15x series transmission dampener, as I have never, ever seen one on any of my or my friends 22re and W56 series transmissions. Perhaps this was a 2nd gen item? I don't recall if the 1st gen with a 3vze came with a manual trans, and if it did, if it was an r or w series trans, but that could be the key factor here.

In any case, after you replace the main mount, if it doesn't vibrate without that dampener in, leave it out if you like. Although, since you have it, why not use it? I don't know how much wheelin' you do, but if you aren't doing semi-hardcore stuff (or harder), where you're sliding off of big rocks, I doubt this dampener would hinder your wheelin' experience.
