Transmission Whine

This has been going on for a few months but I haven't been able to address it until I got home. My tranny has a very high pitched whine. It's especially bad if its cold out or just starting. It's only when it's in gear, and REALLY squeals right before it shifts up. The instant it shifts the whine totally drops off until its about to shift again.

The tranny fluid is fine, level and looks/smells fine. And I haven't had any other issues. A shop diagnosed it as the tranny but said it was still fine (and it has been) to drive until I was able to either get a new tranny or fix this one. The truck doesn't act weird when shifting or accelerating or anything similar, just the whine that is slowly getting worse.

I'm wondering if anyone has insight into what might be going on? I'm thinking it might be the torque converter whining, since it only happens right before I shift and when the oil is still cold. If it seems like that's the consensus then I will just pull and replace it and hope it works (if not then I only lost $150 and can take it to a shop to do a total overhaul). Like I said, I've had this going on for probably 8-9 months.

It's an 01 if it matters.

Thanks for any insight.

I had a BMW once that did that and a filter change fixed my issue. If I remember correctly the filter collapsed or was blocked and was causing the noise. Might be worth a shot since its an easy job and pretty cheap.
