Transmission woes. This thing has me worried.

Been searching and asking people I know, but wanted ask to see what the collective thought.

2001 4Runner v6 4wd, just over 200k miles

The other day it started shifting hard. Not all the time, just randomly. Mostly noticed going into third I believe.

It is also difficult to get down in drive at times.

CEL came on, and the code it's giving is: P0770

And today, it was very difficult get into park. When I did and turn off the car, it started rolling down the driveway when I let off the brake, making a light clicking noise that I knew wasn't good. I immediately push the brakes to stop it, turned the car back on (which I had to push the shifter up to get it to turn on) and shifted through the gears a few times. It was randomly difficult to get into different gears, but finally went into park.

So what do yo guys think? Am I about to buy a new transmission?

I would drain the fluid and see what it looks like first and maybe replace the filter

Hint: The code is for a bad shift solenoid.

Try changing ALL the solenoids first, change the filter at the same time, and if there aren't any major pieces of metal on the magnets, put the pan back on, fill it with Castrol Import ATF and go from there.

Little off topic, but loving the Rockhopper! I have a HardRock myself Good luck with your transmission...I wonder how much it would be to just swap with a used one?

Sounds like a typical 01-02 A340F failure.

Little off topic, but loving the Rockhopper! I have a HardRock myself Good luck with your transmission...I wonder how much it would be to just swap with a used one?

Thanks, I love it, it's a great bike. I've done a few small upgrades to make it more fun to ride.
The real bummer here is, my trans went out in the way to the trails. So not only did my transmission go out, I missed my ride too haha

This happened to me - slipping real bad and sounded like marbles in the trans pan. I did a fluid flush and it was okay for a month or something but then went back to sucking. I got a used trans for 400, labor and torque converter were 700. The guy thought the problem was something about the converter shedding material and clogging up the trans. $1100 isn't the end of the world. I never messed with the solenoids - Other people get P0770 with no symptoms, replace the solenoids, code goes away and no big deal.
