Okay, I have been searching around trying to gather info. I am currently looking at several 2nd gen 4runners. I have gotten a crash course in the worries of the 3.0 V6. I am also seeing that most (so far all) the 2nd gens I have seen are v6's. I understand and I am willing to tackle the issues to make it as reliable as possible. My next biggest concern is the transmission. My last Toy (an 81 SR5 4x4) logged over 360,000 miles with only a front U-joint going out. Needless to say, this is what has me looking to return to a Toyota. But, I know very little about the 4 speed automatic that seems to be in every 4runner I come across. IS this a reliable tranny? Is it as bullet proof as the 5 speed I hammered on for many youthful years? I am looking for something to give me several hundred thousand miles of use. My 81 had over 150,000 miles on it when I got it.
So, my long winded question is what are the opinions on the automatic vs standard transmissions? If you hare one, let me know... Feel free to vent your gripes, it helps me learn!

The W-series manuals and A340 automatics are all great in terms of reliability. The big strike against the A340h you'll find behind the 3.0 is it's chain-driven, and a serious slushbox by all reports. But it'll get you where you want to go every time.
 
The A340 auto trans has been around for decades.
Toyota wouldn't keep using it if it wasn't reliable.
 
I don't hear anything bad about either of them. The manual will get you better mileage and power at the wheels, the auto is easier to wheel with. What's your preference?
 
Rugged- fireman proof... Lol. Actually I'm looking for longevity without a lot of headache. Routine maintenance is one thing. But I dont want something that has a history problems. By that I mean, 3.0 head gaskets.
 
Or you can just keep your eye out for a 2nd gen with a 22re, although I don't believe they came with an auto, only the w56 manual tranny.
