transmission?

Stuck CAPS

Alright, a few questions. Are the 4spd's in the 4wd and 2wd different transmissions? What transmission is it if it's the same? What are they if they're different? Does the 4spd in the 4wd use the same transfer case as the 5spd? If not, what transfercase is in the 4spd?

Never having actually seen a 2wd 4runner, I can't say with absolute certainty, but in every case I have seen, the 2wd transmission has a different output shaft and housing than the 4wd version. With the 4wd models, the transfer case bolts directly to the rear of the transmission case. While the 2wd models have an extension housing and longer output shaft that the drive shaft yoke slips onto. It may be possible to convert from one type to the other by dissasembling the trans and swapping the necessary components.

Or, if there were to be a T-case made FOR the 2wd transmissions, like inchworm has done with older 2wd 4runners.
