I have a 96 4runner and when I am running the air it really makes a roar on take off. It sounds like you are starting out in a very low gear. Is this normal because of a 4 cylinder and being a 4 wheel drive?

It's probably just your fan clutch, nothing to worry about.

I cannot think of a single reason why your transmission would "roar" at you.

If you're truly worried about it, which I do not think you should be, take a video of your 4runner with the sound you're speaking of.

more than likely its your fan clutch. when you turn your ac on it tends to make your vehicle run a little hotter. thats why if your in the middle of the dessert and you start to climb hills there is usually a sign that tells you to turn your ac off because a lot of cars tend to over heat because of desert heat and ac and climbing hills.

i wouldn't worry about it. im 100 percent sure its just your fan clutch kicking on when you turn your ac on. its normal
