I recently bought a 2002 4runner limited, but I was given only a key(master) and a remote. I bought a remote on ebay and I did the programming myself. Since I wanted to have more than one key, I bought two transponder keys on ebay. They look exactly like OEM ones. I followed the instruction below but it was not successful. The security light keeps blinking and it never stops. It seems like 2002 4runner transponder keys are programmable without going to the dealer and 2003 and forward can only be done at the dealer. I made an appointment with a dealer for tomorrow and they want to charge me about 50 dollars to program the keys. I still want to do this successfully without paying 50 dollars. The other dealer I went today quoted 120 dollars. He said it takes about 90 mins, and I told him about the other dealer that would charge me 50 dollars, but he said it's 120 dollars at his dealer, and that's based on standard labor charge.
Once I get transponder key stuff done and have my registrations and all, I will share with you guys about my car buying experience, hopefully within two weeks.
1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time
2. Insert existing master key into ignition.
3. Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4. Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
5. Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
6. Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
7. After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
8. Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.
After step 5 keep your key in the ignition, your blinking security light should turn off after about 1 1/2 minutes.
