Trash to treasure- stories of great deals?

I already own a 1998 SR5 with 193k miles on it and I'm looking for another right now to eventually bestow to my daughter in a few years. The 3rd gens under 250k miles are driving a pretty good price down here in Georgia and the southeast, but there are some deals to be had if you're patient.

I've got my eye on a '98 with 250k that a guy is asking $1500 for... seats are trashed, but seems to be in decent mechanical shape...

I know some of you have found some great deals on your 4runners... any stories out there of buying what visually looked like a trashed 4R but turned out to be a great deal? A diamond in the rough?

My experience with cars is usually the worst they look in an out, then less time was spent on maintenance. Usually if you are rough with the way you take care of your vehicle, the more rough it was driven. I find these to be money pits normally.

370 KMs 5 speed with lockers and sunroof, paid 300 bucks for the thing and it was in quite a state, havent any before pictures unfortunately

I recently stumbled across one on a facebook buy/sell page by accident. It was about an hour and half away. 97 or 98, 255K miles, 4wd, they said it ran fine and everything worked. Looked pretty much stock. $1000. Told them I had cash, but apparently someone got to it before me.

It was pretty bad, The rear panels and around the windshield, did quite a bit of body. Looks good from far but far from good. Gonna paint it in bedliner soon enough. Still need to do the rocker panels. Those are pretty bad

that whole back panel was rusted out to the gas cap almost. Looked like moldy swiss cheese

Not a 4Runner, but back in my Jeep days I bought a '93 ZJ for a case of Miller Lite, put a new rear main seal in it (4.0L) and sold it for $1500.

Earlier this year I bought my 97 sr5 4x4 automatic all leather, no locker with 166k miles. The paint on the roof is oxidizing, it was pretty dirty, and mud caked underneath because previous owner working in oil field and drove on mud roads. Anyways everything works perfect, even has new Michelin tires, bought for $1500. Runs excellent
